Sounds like you need a DVD decoding software, ie... winvid, interdvd, and powerdvd. Windows media player will play some DVD's, but many DVD's, especially newer ones, need an additional decoder in order to work. You will be able to find the software at filehippo.com, download.com, or IBM's support site. Keep in mind that burning software, ie... nero, roxio, and dvd shrink, have decoders in order to burn the DVD, so they will work as a decoder in conjunction with your media player.

First off, the same operating system doesn't mean the same DVD decoding software. Your friends machine may have decoding software that yours doesn't. Also, it doesn't matter if you don't have a DVD burner, the burning software has decoders that will work to play DVD's. If you have tried decoding or burning software, like I originally suggested, then the problem will be with either the optical eye or the reading board in the DVD drive. Either way the drive is going out and will need to be replaced. Keep in mind that just because a drive will read CD's doesn't mean that it's good and will read DVD's. These are two entirely separate sections in the drive, one can fail while the other works just fine.

cd/dvd rom is probably not working ,try using a lense cleaner disc if that doesn't work it's cheap enough to just install a new drive DVD/Rw as they are about £20.00 new.

Sony NEC OptiArc can't read but can write!!!

Try to play the cd that you have wrote with other machine if it was able to read with other machine then your dvd is faulty.

If it cannot play with other machine, then there is a problem with the software that you use in cd writing or the dvd rom drive. Try to re-install both drivers, then play a cds.

After I reinstalled my pc, the toshiba dvd-rom (sd-c2502) only plays cds, not dvds.

Try re-installing your the driver for your dvd rom. Then try to put different dvds and check if it can read from your drive. If problem remains, I suspected it's your dvd rom is faulty

My laptop not use a pirated or copy dvd

While it's not legal to download, and burn DVD's illegally, if your rom has issues reading burned DVD / CD data, your drive may be faulty, or just needs to be blown out. Use a can of compressed air available from most office supply stores and blow any dust or debris out of the drive. Be careful not to touch the Lense, they are quite delacate.

If your drive still fails to read burned media, but does fine with normal media, the drive may not be able to read burned media at all, and you will need to replace it to do so.

T23 coming with a 27L4355 dvd drive

All cd/dvd drives can read data cds.

Install cds and dvds for operating system installs are in data format.

If the drive is working properly, this will be no problem.

BTW, there's so such thing as a stupid question

'Hope this helps.

Have you tried using a lense cleaner disk?

Can you hear the disk spinning at all?

Is the problem with both cd and dvds?

What kid of disk are you trying to play? Some dvd roms will not read dvdrw disks.
