Re: ibm t23 laptop dvd rom not reading some dvds
Sounds like you need a DVD decoding software, ie... winvid, interdvd, and powerdvd. Windows media player will play some DVD's, but many DVD's, especially newer ones, need an additional decoder in order to work. You will be able to find the software at filehippo.com, download.com, or IBM's support site. Keep in mind that burning software, ie... nero, roxio, and dvd shrink, have decoders in order to burn the DVD, so they will work as a decoder in conjunction with your media player.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

While it's not legal to download, and burn DVD's illegally, if your rom has issues reading burned DVD / CD data, your drive may be faulty, or just needs to be blown out. Use a can of compressed air available from most office supply stores and blow any dust or debris out of the drive. Be careful not to touch the Lense, they are quite delacate.
If your drive still fails to read burned media, but does fine with normal media, the drive may not be able to read burned media at all, and you will need to replace it to do so.
Dvd drives can read from both DVD and CD however due to technological limitations most DVD-ROM or RAM read up to slightly higher speeds for CDs than DVDs.
When burning DVDs professional companies that make prerecorded disks burn their disk at low speeds in an effort to achieve both compatibility and low errors, that is the reason their DVDs play on most DVD-ROMs. However DVDs me and you burn at home and work at high speeds are prone to errors and incompatibility with low reading speed drives.
As a result if your DVD-ROM has a low maximum reading speed then it can only read those prerecorded DVDs and only DVDs recorded at low speeds provided thre are not scratched.
I believe you managed to read those DVD movies if they were pre recorded.
solution for CD-rom problem: turn CW the second little potentiometer with a tiny screwdriver, just a little and try to read a CD, if it doesnt work then try turn the potentiometer again. the same solution for DVD-rom but with the first potentiometer.
Internal the pickup assy. (the laser) there are three components that read the discs, one for DVD one for CD and one for the DVD-ROM its likely that the DVD-ROM laser has gone out.
Take the drive out and get the part number and look it up online on ebay or the like :-)
