My laptop's sound is not functioning. My media players work, video will play on the internet, and the touch buttons also emit sound. However, the volume bar on the task bar doesn't indicate any sound is being emitted. My speakers and headphones will not produce sound. I ran a Microsoft troubleshooting diagnostic (because I have no idea what the problem is) and no errors were found. Do I need to (or can I) replace my sound card?

There are a few things you can try here. You say sound works when you start your laptop, can you play sound off the Internet, for instance a news clip or youtube video? If so, the problem may be with the media player you are using. There should be a volume control on your media player, in addition to the Windows volume control. You might want to try using a different media player, like musicmatch jukebox or Winamp.
You probably don't have the right codec installed to play the videos you downloaded. Try installing Perian from http://www.perian.org/. This adds support for more types of videos.
If that doesn't work, try playing them with VLC: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ VLC is a media player that supports nearly every format out there.
Try to re-install the Acer media touch and update your machine's bios to its latest version. (you can download it from the acer site --> www.acer.com/support)
