Solution #1 is always what apple agent do with iPhone and iPod touch calls. If that doesn't work they always recommend calling your ISP ( internet service provider ) however; you can actually do this yourself.
This may work but simply restart your router. Unplug your wireless G or B router from the wall. Wireless N routers will not work and are not compatible with both of these devices. Even though your computer may be working fine. The iPhone and iPod touches are not compatible with wireless N routers.
After disconnect the wireless router from the wall. Leave it unplugged for 5min or more, then re-connect it. This is called resetting your router.
After resetting your router turn your wi-fi off on your device and turn it back on and you should have some luck. If asks for password. enter in your password to join.
I had the same exact problem where it says the server stopped responding, and it look me a while to figure out how to fix it but all i did was go to setting>wifi and then turn wifi off. Then i unpluged all the cables from my router and then plugged them back in. Then on my computer I went to: control panel>Network Connections>clicked on my wifi connection>then a little box appeared and it has 2 colums at the top (general and Support)>i went to support and clicked repair. After this my Wifi started working properly again. (remember to turn wifi back on your ipod when your done) woooow im a genius =)

I had the same problem with my ipod.
it would connect to the router and show signal strength but, when I clicked on safari
it would say not connected to the internet.
What worked for me was to go to my routers set up page.(the web address, username and password were on the back of the router.) I had set a different password for each different encryption type wep,wpa wpa2 and wpa+wpa2 so I made it the same password for all the different encryptions and set it 2 the wpa+wpa2 setting. I haven't had a problem since. I haven't checked to see if it works with any of the other encryption types because it ain't broke so I ain't gonna try fix'in it. :)
Well That Doesnt Work... I Have The Same Problem.. And Its Getting Annoying as hell.. I WANT TO GET ON MY IPOD WIFI D:!!!!!!!!!!!! im like NEEDING IT... badly... i hate sitting at my desk on the laptop with a bad back :( i cant get my stupid internet to work on it at all.. i think i might need to go to the Apple Store or something to see if they could fix it :\ if you guys have any more suggestions help please :(
If you go to settings>general>reset>reset network settings
if it displays an apple just wait till it takes you to the home screen
now do a full reset on the ipod (hold down the home button and the button on the top until it displays an apple)
now you should go to settings>network and it will let you connect to your desired network, just put in the password and you should be all taken care of! :)
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

Unsecured wireless Internet networks are available in many
cafes and public spaces. An unsecured network is a wireless Internet connection
that does not require a password. Use your iPod Touch Wi-Fi capability to
connect to these networks and the Internet. Although excellent for surfing and
email, avoid carrying out banking or financial information into an unsecured
network, because there is a possibility that the signal is intercepted.

1. Open the Settings menu of your iPod Touch. It is the gray
gear icon on the home screen.

2. Tap "WiFi" and move it to "On" if
needed. If your Wi-Fi is already activated, you will see a pop-up asking if you
have the unsecured network. Some companies, like Starbucks, have a "Log
In" screen appears automatically.

3. Click "Yes" or "Join" for the network
to automatically connect when prompted. The text may vary depending on the
company, and you may need to read and agree to the terms and conditions
statement. If no login screen appears, wait until you play for scanning
available Wi-Fi signals. The list is displayed.

4. Select the network name you want to join the list. An
unsecured network has a password, so you will not be asked to give.

5. Click on "automatic network in the future" when
asked if you want to do.

6. Wait until the light of the Wi-Fi indicator in the upper
left corner of the touch. This indicates that you are online and ready to ride.

Are equipped with Wi-Fi connectivity that allows the device
using wireless Internet networks. The iPod Touch can connect to open and secure
Wi-Fi signals, and remember the details of the networks that had already turned
on. If you enter the wrong password when connecting to a secure network, the
iPod Touch still remember the password and try to use whenever it is within
reach. The password must be manually placed back into the iPod settings to
connect properly.

1. Start the Settings application on the iPod Touch, tap the
home screen.

2. Open the "Wi-Fi" page. The list of upcoming
Wi-Fi will be displayed.

3. Touch the small blue arrow to the right of the Wi-Fi
network that you want to change the "Select Network" list. A detail
of the network is displayed.

4. Select "Forget this Network" button at the top
of the screen. This removes all previously entered security information stored
on the iPod Touch.

5. Tap again to the network in the "Select
Network" list and enter the password security options on the pop-up box.
Press the "Register" button to connect to Wi-Fi network with the
security detail changed.
Is the Ipod on when you connect it? If so, reset it and connect it again. If that doesn't work, check that the cord you are using isn't broken or your Ipod's jack isn't messed up. If it still doesn't work try a different usb slot on your computer.
Is there a blackberry symbol near your wireless signal strength indicator (top right corner of home screen)? If the blackberry symbol is there, then you are connected to the RIM network, just don't have an internet connection from your service provider, or it is blocked by your BES network administrator if you are on a work phone.
If you are paying your service provider for data access, then you should contact them as it is likely a problem with your account. If you are on a work device, then you should contact your IT department as either the internet is disabled on their devices, or there is a problem with the settings relating to your device.
If messages are still going through fine for email and BBM, then it isn't a problem with your phone, but with whatever service it is connected to.
Try connecting to the Internet through the ethernet port (via a cable). If Internet Explorer loads the target page then you have a configuration problem with WI-Fi access : The wireless security settings are not allowing the computer to access the Internet. If Internet Explorer does not connect with the cable then the problem resides with Internet Explorer. Try to reset the defaults. To confirm that download FireFox and use it. Besides you need two browsers just in case one acts up.
Your problem may appear from a not properly enabled WLAN card. Make sure the Wi-Fi swithc is in ON position and on your laptop keyboard try the FN+F8 combination to have displayed the wireless card status. The WLAN card has to be ENABLED to be able to connect to the Internet. The combination done will make appear on your display a window with some options available; choose that option that enables your wireless card. Also check in your computer's DEVICE MANAGER if your WLAN card is working properly. To do so follow these simple steps: 1. START and click on SYSTEM; 2. in SYSTEM option click on DEVICE MANAGER; 3. on DEVICE MANAGER option go at NETWORK ADAPTERS and see if there your wireless card is indicated and it shows that it is working PROPERLY; 4. if an UNKNOWN DEVICE is indicated then try to find the right driver for you notebook model and WLAN card model; 5. install the driver then REBOOT and recheck in DEVICE MANAGER if your WLAN card is displayed properly this time.
