Place an empty disc in, format the disc, record a little scene. Turn off camcorder. Place the error disc in the camcorder, turn on the camcorder all the way to play/edit. If this doesn't work turn it to record and try to record. Worked for some of my error disc
I get loads of the same question you ask every day, the DVD disks do sadly fail, out of a pack of 10 you can say that 2 will not write or play back, this is still the reason most pro movie makers like myself will only use movie tape today like the Hi 8 mm sort. Also beware as we have found that lots of DVD disks we have made over 9 years ago no longer will work, so never feel your precious movies are pernament with this new mode of recordings.
Try to use a cotton swap to 1st clean the recording lens or blow gently
on it. Place an empty disc in, format the disc, record a little scene.

I'm sorry to say, that all disk manufactures are not the same. If you used a "no name" disk, then the quality may not be what you want, although in rare cases, even good companys like Memorex can make a bad batch or two. Just try another disk. Let me know if that works by leaving a comment. If this works for you, rate my solution a fixya!
RE; smasung DC 161(i) pal and possibly other models The reason why there is no disc message when there is definitely a disc is installed is because the disc programming has malfunctioned, Its because of Samsungs poor design, after powering up the camcorder and inserting a disc, the disc will load and a green flashing light appears for a minute or two while loading if the Samsung camcorder is switched off while loading the camcorder will essentailly self destruct and their is no remedy, however that does not mean the Samsung is completely useless, the camcorder can record on a 4 GB SDHC(max 4GB) card using the switch from disc to memory card
