Question about Computers & Internet

My HP Pavilion s7210n slimline pc is 3 years old. I am having a problem with the connection to my monitor. It will stay connected for about 10-15 minutes then the monitor shuts down and there is an electrical burning smell from the computer. I have tried hooking up to another monitor and the same thing happens.

Same issue with a s7220n model. I'm thinking it could be the power supply. Thoughts?

Same issue here. Happened five times back to back. Symptoms:

    1) Computer on and screen just goes into power saving mode out of no where. 2) Burning smell from computer. 3) running really hot o the top and rear top near power supply.

I don't think it is the Vcard because power dies out completely from the computer including all USB devices.

The PSupply is in the top of the case and thats where the smell is comming from also.

I opened my case up and blew out the dust bunnies and left the side off for better ventilation and it has not done it since.

Still kinda hot, and still smells funny...probably head down to BBY and look for a new PSupply before it dies completely.

The problem is the power supply. it's pretty much a special order part since the slimline case is 'non-standard' . check the link for more info.

HP Pavilion Slimline S3400f Desktop.
dont worry ALL PC end up like this,, all do.. sooner or later..
NO OS stated, XP"? never post without OS stated, or answer get 10x more harder, See? make it easy for the helper and get more help.....
no Monitor stated. (maker, CRT, LCD what?)
The monitor is not fibbing to you BTW, the PC did go dead or to sleep. seems its monitor monitor of some kind with DVI.

if the monitor works on other PCs then the monitor is not bad.
i Bet it works (old ones 2002, have a hidden deep internal sleep mode. and is not yours IM sure now) DVI IS THE ONLY CLUE THERE.
So PC is dead. this PC came with only VISTA new,
is it still VISTA?????????
HP has support on it still
here (carbon dated by me 2008, IIRC)
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-pavilion-slimline-s3400-desktop-pc-series/3688715/model/3688723

this year,? get all those files and books there backed up
when HP support ends after 10 year rule, (be savvy?)

what keyboard USB or wireless keyboard mouse
use wired USB keyboards if wireless the battery is dead. easy no?

now in VISTA, go to Control panel, click power
turn off all sleep modes and all hibernate modes
the turn off screen savers, if turned on , disktop . RC right click
in display settings or personalize, turn off , need login to come out of sleep or screen saver.
try a real keyboard, that has USB cable yet? be first thing to do.
always keep a real keyboard, handy,,,
batteries fail. in all wireless devices like this (inside them)

luck you desktops have lies DIM fails. there are many.

one other way , and common is PC overheated.

Try the display on a different PC. The on board video may be defective, if so you will need to buy a new video card. Check to see what type you need. Good luck. I hope this helps...Have a good day.

Hi Im Rain.
I may have bad news for you. Its a very bad sign when your keyboard and monitor are not working at the same time. Sounds like the technician was right.
I also think its your motherboard. If you really just like the computer you can invest in another motherboard.

If you are sure that the monitor and cable are fine, then it is possible that the onboard video can be going bad. If you can regain the color while "jiggling" the cable at the connector to the computer and you are 100% certain the cable is bad, then this can indicate a loose connection of the plug to the mainboard. This is often caused by what is called a cold solder spot, where it has not adhered to the metals and thus causes a loose connection. If this is not the issue, then it is safe to say that perhaps the onboard video is going bad... assuming it is an onboard video since the unit is a slimline. If space permits, you can always add a video card and disable the onboard video.
