My ViewSonic V37 Upgrade arrives! However, I cannot get the device to display the "Upgrade tool menu" despite following the directions!
I know that the V35 required you to move the battery switch (cold boot), rotate the scroll dial down (towards the record button), and while it is in this position move the battery switch back on (down), releasing the scroll dial after about three seconds.
The directions are the same for the V37 - however, on my V37 it only reboots the device! It never enters the "Upgrade tool menu" - is anyone else having the same problem...? Are there different steps to get the V37 into upgrade mode?
don't roll the scroll down towards the record button - PUSH IT IN instead, and follow the rest of the instructions. That worked for most people.

A co-worker and I have had exactly OPPOSITE experience with this... HE had to roll his V37 jog dial DOWN. I had to press mine IN.
This tells me there is more than one revision of the V37. =========================================================
Also probably explains why the foldable keyboard driver tests fine at Viewsonic, yet doesn't work for me and at least one other person i've talked to after the 2003 upgrade.

I have the V37. I am experiencing the same problem. Following all instructions, I move the battery switch to the Off position. I hold the scroll dial "Down" towards the record button. While it is held down, I move the battery switch to the On position. I wait 3 seconds , then release the Scroll dial, and it only reboots the device. I cannot get to the Upgrade menu. At this point, I'm quite frustrated , but I am happy about one thing: That I did not pay for this product. Based on the product development and support I've seen by Viewsonic related to this product so far, I will NEVER consider purchasing any Viewsonic products of any kind.

Ok, after further research, I found a post in Newsgroups: microsoft.public.msdn.general Date: 2004-01-05 08:57:55 PST
by a gentleman named Mark Reddick. See that post, he has the correct instructions for getting the V37 into 'update' mode, contrary to viewsonic's instructions.

I've seen similar things in a few of my battery monitoring apps. I've recently dumped them and am trying todayplus, so we'll see. It's fully charged, showing it so, since I'm plugged in with my USB cable and the battery's not going down. Tonight when I start playing some more I should see how this new app displays battery usage.
I'm having several issues with various ebook reading programs, such as uBook, iSilo, Mobipocket, etc... But I'm not sure if that's a problem with the V37's implementation of WM2003 (since none of these problems existed in 2002 and many people are running 2003 without these issues) or if I have a hardware problem here.
My big speed notice is installing programs, and copying files via activestink's USB connection. I never used it previously, always either pulling out the SD card and inserting it in my Toshiba tablet PC to put files on, or doing things over 802.11. After the upgrade the USB connection is incredibly quick and preferable now...

from page 4 of 5 of "ROM Upgrade Instruction for Pocket PC V37" text file on CD-ROM disk. Use the stylus to move the battery (cold-boot) switch located on the back of the Pocket PC to OFF (up position), then rotate the scroll dial towards the Record button. While keeping the scroll dial in this position, move the battery switch to the ON (down position). Wait 3 seconds, then release the scroll dial.
Up to this time, you should have your V37 out of it's cradle. In about 5 seconds the upgrade Tool menu will display on your Pocket PC. Replace your V37 into it's cradle and click Next on your host PC to Continue.
I was following the quick instructions until I printed the V37 ROM Upgrade manual. Don't follow the quick install instructions as it is not correct.
Hope this is of help to you. Lamar

You are correct. I could not go back to PPC 2002. While WM 2003 is taking up more memory on my PPC it doesn't really seem to be a problem. I really haven't noticed a difference in the speed. The problems I am having are more of an annoyance which it looks like I will have to live with. 1) Jitter when scrolling windows or controls using the stylus and the scroll bar. 2) Transcriber is extra sensitive. 3) Battery Pack 2004 keeps telling me the battery is low while the PPC is on the cradle and charging.
Have you experienced any of these problems?
Thanks, Shane

I did a complete backup of my PPC before the upgrade and I should be able to just restore the backup to my PPC. If I am not mistaken, I have already done this once. Actually, It was when I was trying to get it into upgrade mode and couldn't so I still had PPC 2002 installed, so maybe I won't be able to. I think I will give it a try tonight to see what happens.

The backup won't undo the rom changes - viewsonic confirmed on their website that there's no way to roll the V37 back to 2002. :(
Too bad, since I miss the available memory I used to have before the upgrade. On the other hand, the speed increase *almost* makes it worth losing the memory.
I'm still trying to see what I can tweak out to free up space, so I haven't given up hope yet.

I upgraded my V37 to Windows Mobile 2003 a few weeks ago and have not experienced the problems you describe, though I do not use the Transcriber. My overall feelings:
Benefits:
Windows Media Player 9 allows me to play purchased(protected) music that I download from Napster Programs written in VisualStudio.Net for the Compact Framework (I am a developer) run more quickly.
Downside:
A couple of programs (most importantly SOTI's PocketPC Controller) require paid upgrades for 2003-compatible versions

Everything is working for me so far. Did the upgrade earlier tonight and so far no problems. --
Did you hold the jog dial on the left side downward for 3 seconds after you reset the battery? That's what I had to do with my V-35. See post just below yours. Hope this helps. Treeman the device to display the "Upgrade tool menu" despite following the directions! switch (cold boot), rotate the scroll dial down (towards the record button), and while it is in this position move the battery switch back on (down), releasing the scroll dial after about three seconds. V37 it only reboots the device! It never enters the "Upgrade tool menu" - is anyone else having the same problem...? Are there different steps to get the V37 into upgrade mode?

With thanks to a helpful technician at ViewSonic support ...
The V37 requires you to hold the jog dial *IN* (contrary to the upgrade documentation included with the V37), not down (like the V35).
