It sounds like your door sensors may be bad or misaligned. Make sure the small light on each sensor is lit and not flickering. That could be the cause of your having to hold the wall button down until the door is closed. You can buy a universal remote but if you only had one remote before it could be the receiver that has quit. A new remote would not fix that but the only way to find out is to try.
Adjust the position of the door by using the black and purple
buttons. Black moves the door UP (open) and purple moves
the door DOWN (close)
Setting the up position:
1. Press and hold the black button until the LED starts flashing
slowly, then release.
2. Push and hold the black button until the door reaches the
desired UP (open) position
3. Push the door control or programmed remote control. This
sets the Up (open) position and begins closing the door.
4. Immediately when the door begins to close press and release
the black or purple button. This will stop the door
Setting the Down position:
5. Push and hold the purple button until the door reaches the
desired DOWN (Closed) position.
6. Once the door is closed, If there appears to be too much
pressure on the door, you may toggle the door back and forth
using the black and purple buttons to reach the desired closed
position.
7. Push the door control or programmed remote control. This
sets the Down (closed) limit and the door should open.
If the small light in your wall control is blinking it is in the lock mode. Press and hold for 3 seconds the button with the icon of a lock. This will toggle the lock function off.
It sounds like you have the lock enguaged. When it is flashing it locks out all remote access. Hold the lock button for 3 seconds. The green light should go solid. On the issue of closing, it is most likely a safety eye issue. Hold down the wall button. If it closes it is the safety eyes. Holding the button overrides the safety eyes. Make sure that thelight on both eyes are both lit.
IF U HAVE TWO EYE,SENSORS ON EACH SIDE OF THE DOOR SEE IF SOMETHING IS BLOCKING THE EYES OR SOETHING IS COVERING THEM, OR THEY ARE OUT OF ALIGNMENT, ONE SHOULD SHOW GREEN, AND ONE RED EYE, GOOD LOCK
