Question about Boston Acoustics BA735 Computer Speakers

1 Answer

Volume on/off potentiometer

Hello. I have a Boston BA735 that I haven't used for years. The volume/power control pot is bad now. If I plug in the power cord the power automatically comes on the speakers and the volume is full blast. Volume control can be manipulated when tinkering with the stem but it's unstable. Power can only be shut off by unplugging it. All else looks to be fine. I need a replacement pot but have NO idea where to find one. I've looked and looked but I can't find a suitable match. Need help finding this simple little part!! Thanks.

Hi,

You didn't mention where you are from, so it's hard to recommended a parts source. There are a few of variables here.

Such as:
1. The resistance value of the potentiometer.
2. The length and diameter of the shaft.
3. The shaft end determining what type of knob it will accomodate.
4. Physical size (depth & circumference with on/off switch).

You might try mcmelectronics.com but again, I don't know where you are located. Have you tried contacting the manufacturer's parts department and seeing if you can order the part?

If you can gain access to some tuner cleaner spray/electrical contact cleaner spray, you can try spraying that into the pot and see if it restores the volume control. The on/off switch is probably shot but it won't hurt to spray that as well. The spray is also available from mcmelectronics.com

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.
Good luck!
- Jim

You can order replacement speaker cables from Gateway Spares online.
These look like the appropriate cables:

My Boston Digital BA735 speakers are not working. power is on. cords are correctly placed, volume on comp is not muted

Try to isolate the problem. Connect the speakers to another computer or mp3 player or stereo. Test the speakers for sound making sure all volume switches are on. If they work look to sound settings on your computer.

Re: Boston digital BA735. Hum with or without input signal.

Hmmm I just got the same problem. They worked fine on my old Dell desktop but when I plugged them in to my son's old Dell PC (maybe 1 year newer than my old one) they all hum like crazy - as you say even if it's just the power plugged in and nothing else. Yes it does have the original power supply. I get no music (but still it hums) from digital out/in but when I switch to analog out/in I hear the music and it still hums, plus the sound is distorted. Wierd.

Connecting BA735 digital 3.5mm plug with S/PDIF coax jack

The male mono plug (from the left small speaker) should be connected into the right speaker (small speaker with controls) . After plugging the multi pin cable from the control speaker to the sub-woofer you need to plug in a signal source from your computer (or any other digital signal) into the sub-woofer. This digital input looks like an ordinary RCA plug but carries many channels of audio. That connects to the enabled digital output of your computer. Some computers output digital through a 3.5mm jack others look just like an RCA phono jack. If you are lucky some BA735 sub-woofers have a second input that is a standard 3.5mm stereo jack and it will take analog audio from computer, DVD, MP3 player or the like. I have three sets of these speakers that I love because of their big volume considering such a small size.

My Speakers went out and now all I hear is a buzz.

hello there,

First things First:

1) Check cables for dust, or bad connectivity. Clean aprop.
2) Clean carefully the volume control inside, with spray for computer use.(carefully inside the conectors)
3) Finally and sadly, have to change the speakers, may be is something damage inside the board of speakers, or fried. :o(
good Luck
