This is not as easy as it seems. I tried to do that when I registered my new unit. In the dowload process (attached to my PC via USB), the site told me I need some special software to manage the download. It looked like some Microsoft product I never heard of. As it finished installing the vector software, the Garmin update maps never got downloaded. Each time I tried, my PC slowed down, to actually crashing ! Rebooting told me it can only come back on in the Safe mode (do drivers). So my only savior was to Reset to a previous date, when all went well. Boy, was that nasty ! Now, my PC runs Vista Premium Home edition using Explorer. I never was happy with Vista. I still have not updated my Garmin, but should soon.
Try their https://my.garmin.com/maps/nuMaps.htm page to see if you qualify.
Maybe your PC will accept the software to load the new maps into your Garmin. Just be ready to reset your computer to a previous user date, so you can fix your Crash.
PS - I had no time yet to alert Garmin Support of this issue. I enjoyed using it in Hawaii. It really helped.
