A few weeks ago my tv picture went bad. When I turn on the set, there would only be a thin horizontal line across the middle of the screen. The sound was fine. After about 30 minutes the picture would fill out and there would be no other problem. The color would be fine, the screen would not exhibit any rolling.
I think the tube is gone and probably needs to be replaced. I've checked on line and this seems to be a fairly expensive solution. Could it be something else or should I just look for a new tv?

Yes...this TV may be repaired. The line you describe is in the center and is horizontal across the TV. You will need to resolder the vertical IC pins. This vertical IC is mounted on a large heatsink. Under the board you will see there are 5 or 7 pins that will have rings around them. Resolder these. And you should replace two or three capacitors that are next to this IC. A bad cap will overheat an IC and separate the solder grounds. If you can find my expertise page on this website, you will see the repair in more detail. Thanks for asking and show a few hands of support.
If it's a horizontal line across the face of the picture tube, your TV has a problem with its vertical output. Most likely, it's bad solder connections to the vertical output IC. Because this part gets very hot during normal operation, the connections to the circuit board can crack and the part quits working. All you see then is that narrow line across the tube. A few minutes with a soldering iron to repair the connections is usually all that's needed to fix the TV. It's also possible the part has truly failed, but the bad connections a much more common. A service shop could do the repair if you don't know anyone with the soldering skills.
now only visible in a thin horizontal line.
first of all you reduce brightness to monimum.
it just to protect your tv from crt demage.
your problem is in horizontal output section as you have mentioned that week or so ago the right and left bottom edges of the picture began to move in like a sideways triangle filled with black so this sympton is due to hor. section problem.
your flyback transformer or horizontal output might be defective.
but remember check for power supply is ok from
hope this will help.
