Question about Garmin GPS

Nuni 670. Maps out of date. Purchased updated maps - followed update procedure exactly. Software reports unit updated OK. removed Nuvi and it fails to restart - gets about 3/4 way through "loading maps" and just hangs.

Yes I have reset the unit many time. The software is fully up to date (unit and maps)

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

No unit no longer will connect to host computer - as I mentioned it just hands during the reboot process.

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

Did the firmware update a couple of days ago - no problems. My issues began when I tried to update the maps. I cant get the unit to get past the loading maps screen.

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

    Just to recap
    1. Updated firmware - all OK.
    2. Updated maps - all reported OK.
    3. Disconnected Garmin and it auto resets.
    3. Hangs during the reboot on the udating maps screen.

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

I tried - they only work Mon - Friday and the email service deosnt work - hence the reason I am on FixYa.

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

Anyone know how to do a cold reboot on these units ?

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

I just tried without SD card - same problem. When you load new maps I think they go to the flash memory rather than  the SD card but it was worth a shot. Looks like I need Garmin help.

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

Any last thoughts before I give up ?

  • carll2500 Jul 13, 2008

Thanks. I will try Garmin tomorrow so if they can shed any light.

The complete solution - user reset is NOT necessary:

Whenever I purchase a new electronic device, the first thing I do is update the firmware. This has me in a bind in this case.

I updated my Nuvi firmware, then my BT firmware.

A few days later, I got the "Enabling Bluetooth" hang. I followed the advice on this page, but "Bluetooth Firmware Update" would not appear in the webupdate list.

1. Browse here and install the latest version of WebUpdater:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=999-99999-27

2. Turn on your Nuvi, press view map, press speed, press and hold the middle of the speedometer (the circle that says 0.0mph in it). After five seconds (maybe a bit longer), the engineering menu will appear.

3. Press "Next" five times (once for each page). You will arrive at the "Bluetooth Status" page.

4. Press "Clear". Confirm by pressing "yes".

5. Press "Updt PR". Confirm by pressing "yes".

6. This probably did _nothing_ for you, but to be thorough, I've included the steps.

7. Connect the Nuvi to your computer. Run the webupdater and if the latest version is already detected on your Nuvi, simply proceed and browse the list of further updates.

8. If "Bluetooth Firmware Update..." (or similar text) DOES NOT APPEAR skip to step 10 below, otherwise complete your fix with the next step, step 9.

9. If the "Bluetooth Firmware Update..." (or similar text) appears in your list, select this update and agree to term of service, and have the updater load the firmware onto your device. Unplug your device. It should powerup automatically. Power off. Power back on. Your BT should be back in business. Do NOT continue with the next steps. You are done.

10. If "Bluetooth Firmware Update..." (or similar text) DOES NOT APPEAR in the list, then you need to remove the offending update that is making WebUpdater believe that your Nuvi is up-to-date.

11. You can access the Nuvi by clicking on "My Computer" and double clicking the Nuvi link.

12. Click the "Garmin" folder.

13. Click the "RemoteSW" folder.

14. DELETE "006B055301.GCD". This file will be one of two GCD files in the directory: <DRIVE>:GarminRemoteSW. The file without the "Date Modified" is the original firmware. The other file is the new firmware that the Nuvi believes is installed. By deleting the newer of the two files, WebUpdater will see that your Nuvi is out-of-date. Return to step 8 to continue your fix.

This should resolve all permutations of this nasty bug

The maps must be corrupt and it fails to load, can you reload the maps?

  • Ekse Jul 13, 2008

Ok, time to send it to garmin for warranty repairs in that case.

    contact the support first

    http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us...

or if you have another warranty contract somewhere then contact your dealer.

  • Ekse Jul 13, 2008

the guys at garmin can correct that you, if its still under warranty I assume.

have you tryed starting up without the SD card in the device?

  • Ekse Jul 13, 2008

We could empty the maps if it connected to a pc to fix that problem but as its not connecting you have to take it to someone who can correct the problem.

Need to know how i update the maps card for it

The latest version of Garmin Express provides the ability to install a map update directly to an SD card.
The SD card installation option will only appear when updating a compatible device that does not have sufficient internal memory for the largest allowable map region. When using the SD card installation option, critical files are loaded to the SD card so it must remain in the device after the update to ensure full functionality. For the largest size SD card a device can use, refer to: What is the largest size Secure Digital (SD) card that an automotive device can accept?
The SD card support during the map update will only function with up-to-date software. It may be necessary to update the device's software with Garmin Express prior to updating the maps. These devices do not support the SD card option:
  • Nissan 700
  • nuvi 295
  • nuvi 300 series
  • nuvi 500 series
  • nuvi 600 series
  • nuvi 800 series
  • nuvi 805 series
  • nuvi 5000
  • StreetPilot series
  • zumo 450
  • zumo 550
  • zumo 665
For devices that do not support using the SD card with the map update application, any maps that do not fit in the internal memory can be installed to the SD card manually, using these instructions:

How do i reset my garmin nuvi 200w satnav it says no detailed maps found how can i reinstall them

Locate the reset button, located on the back of the device, in the lower left corner. Remove the sticker covering the button, and use a straightened paper clip to depress the tab.

To reinstall maps

Connect your Garmin Nuvi to your computer via USB cable. You can only update the maps through connecting to your computer.

Open the "myGarmin" website and sign in with your Garmin account. Make sure to sign in with the account that you've purchased the map updates on.

heres a link to the site;

http://my.garmin.com/mygarmin/login.htm.

Click the "myMaps" tab on the myGamrin dashboard. This will load a list of all of your purchased map upgrades.

Click the drop-down menu in the "Recent Map Purchases" section. Select your Garmin Nuvi from the list of devices.

Install the Garmin Communicator Plugin when prompted. This is required in order for the Garmin website to transfer the map files to your Gamrin software on your computer.

Download and install Garmin Express. This is the program that allows your computer to interact with your Garmin Nuvi.

Register your device in Garmin Express. If you haven't already registered your device, you'll be prompted to when you start Garmin Express. You'll need to register in order to update the maps.

Click the "Updates" tab in Garmin Express. This will show all of the available updates for your Nuvi, including the new map update you just purchased.

Click the "Show Details" option next to your Map Update. Click the "Install" button that appears. You will need to accept the agreement before the update installs.

Wait for the maps to download and install. Once you agree to the terms, the map update will begin downloading to Garmin Express, and will then be transferred to your Nuvi. This will likely take several minutes to complete.

Close Garmin Express and unplug the Nuvi when the update is complete. The Nuvi will reboot and begin installing the updated software on the device. This may take another couple of minutes.

If you weren't automatically prompted to install Garmin Express, you can download it from

Garmin does not do free. If you bought a new unit - - brand new they give you one free update IF - and only IF - the maps on your new one isn't current.

I HAVE A GARMIN NUVI 200 AND IT NEEDS TO HAVE THE MAPS UPDATED. IT IS 18 MONTHS OLD AND I CAN'T FIND A FREE DOWNLOAD FOR IT.

Map updates are free for units which are recently sold with the older maps and the new maps have been published, ie you just bought a unit in 2009 which still had 2008 maps on it after the 2009 maps had been released. Rather than recall all the units from the store shelves, they offer free updates on the mapping software. Continually updating the maps on 18 month old units is not free, there is an update charge. What is free from Garmin is the unit's software. Hope this clarifies your assumption.

PROBLEM UPDATING MAPS

Plug your GPS into your PC and do not use the Garmin Express program. It will mount as a drive. Delete the maps and software. Then run Garmin Express and do a complete install of the maps and software.

I Would like to update my Garminc330. I have a glitch in the map (tells me address doesnot exist, when I know it does)

Garmin puts out map updates on a regular basis. You must purchase these. The GPS comes loaded with maps that are current as of the date of production of the unit. It cannot "know" when new roads are paved and new subdivision are created without being "told" via map updates. The unit knows where it is in relation to the maps loaded on it by receiving signals from the GPS satellites in orbit. If things change, the maps must be changed in order for the unit to give you correct directions.

Have you updated the software since you purchased the unit? If not, go to Garmin's site, download WebUpdater and check to see if there is an update to the unit's software. If so, download this and see if it helps. If not, try downloading the same version of the software again. This might help also.
