Can someone please tell me what causes a new ceiling fan to "hum" or
"growl"? Is there a "fix" for this? Many thanks.

Hampton Bay Ceiling fan just installed has a hum or growl in the fan motor at all speeds. I have another fan same model that I installed over 3 years ago and runs silently compared to this new one.

Is it a cheap fan? I have a hampton bay fan that was only about a year
old when the hum started. I sort of like in now, white noise to fall
asleep with. I have three regency fans and they run without any sound
at all, really. Cost more, but they are nice.

Regency changes models often, and you can get the old models on closeout.
I have a 5-blade 60" Regency ceiling fan that I only paid $60 for. It is
in a family room with a wood stove, so it runs summer and winter. It is
5 years old and still not making a sound, except for blade noise when you
run it on high. At the low setting, it is virtually silent, and moves a
lot of air.

I have a few Hampton Bay fans and one broke, I was able to call a fan installer to fix them, mostly the bades were unbalanced. The guy taped some weights on a few of the blades to balance the fan and the noise stopped. It took some time because the weight has to be in the right place on the blade so you have to keep adjusting it up and down each blade. And only a few of the blades have weights on them. Hope this helps.
