This is only a problem with the firmware of your modem/router that you need to update it, because a network device like a modem and router that is working fine for severla years and suddenly stop working you just need to update the firmware of it and it should be working fine again, to update the firmware of the modem/router just need to call the manufacturer for that....
All the laptops available in market have built in wireless 802.11 b/g/n or 802.11 b/g/n Bluetooth® wireless networking. It means that you can access the internet via Wi-Fi or through Wi-Fi hotspots. In wireless connectivity you do not require the wired connection to access the internet. In home you can connect the laptop via wireless connection using the home networking router available in market. The advantage of wireless connection is that you can use the internet in your home anywhere with in 100 meters of range with proper wireless signals. You will require to get the internet connection from the ISP(Internet Service Provider).

Unless you happen to have a wireless AP or router that you can plug into the modem you will need to pull the ethernet cable that runs from the modem to their computer and plug that into the ethernet jack on your laptop. Even though your laptop is capable of wireless it should still have an ethernet jack available to you.
These would be the only ways to get a connection to your computer.
I hope this helps! If this did help you, please give a thumbs up!

Make sure that the modem is plugged in to the wireless linksys router. Plug in your desktop to the ethernet port of the router and check if you're able to get online. If you have a cable or dsl connection, make sure that your router is already configured to work with the modem. Your laptop should automatically detect the wireless network. Scan your wireless network by right clicking the wireless network icon and click on view available wireless networks. The default name of the linksys router is linksys. Try to connect and see if you're able to get online.
your modem. Unplug the modem's power cord and place the wireless router unit
next to the modem. If the router has antennas, make sure they are raised to
their full upright position. 2)Reassign
your networking cable. Unplug the cable currently connected from your computer
to your modem and plug it into the port located in the wireless router. This
port is usually colored blue. 3)Connect
the router and the modem. Use the networking cable that came with your wireless
router to connect the modem and router unit. The router port is typically
colored in green. 4)Start
up your modem. Plug in the modem's power cord and wait 1-2 minutes while it
configures its settings and prepares to connect to the Internet.5 5)Start
up the wireless router. Plug the wireless router's power cord into an outlet
and wait 1-2 minutes to get it started. The router is ready when the 'wired
computers' and 'modem' icons light up. These logos or icons vary by make and
model of your router so consult the owner's manual if needed.6 6)Insert your installation CD. Use the wizard or assistant to check the
configurations of your computer settings and launch yourwirelessnetwork
