The product key on your computer is for your operating system (Windows) not for Office.
The problem you are having is likely due to the fact that Dell ships all computers with a trial version of Office. When the trial expires users have a false sense of ownership and demand their key from Dell or try to steal one from the Internet.
First, make absolutely sure that you bought Office. It will be on you invoice and you will know you paid for it because it will have a cost associated with it. (Office is NEVER given away for free.) If this is the case you should have been sent an activation card with your computer that has your product key.
If you did not buy Office then buy it if you need it. Do not try to bootleg or steal it from the Internet. Modern software will register itself over the Internet and can uniquely identify you, your computer and your IP address. This is enough information to report you to the FBI and prosecute you.
A great free alternative to Microsoft Office is OpenOffice.org. It will open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. If you have a Hotmail account there are links to free online versions of Microsoft Office programs that you can use so long as you have an Internet connection.

Dell installed a trial version of Office on your computer and trials do not have product keys. When your trial expires you have to BUY Office if you want Office. When you buy Office it will include a product key for the version of Office you purchased. When you enter the key on your computer it will enable that version's Office features. (E.g.
