I'm not particularly familiar with 97 GM vehicles, but do you know whether or not your car has a key Fob? This means that there is a computer chip built into your key, If you have one of those, then a GM dealership can duplicate the key for you. If you have a base model with no alarm or anti-theft systems, then you probably don't have a chip in your key, and it would not be impossible for someone at a hardware store to duplicate it. They will have to order the key model though, so it may take a few days. Dealerships are generally the best bet for things like this though. I would gladly duplicate it for you myself, but i'm in Iraq right now. I hope this helps. Good luck

If you have the key with the "chip" or resistor in it, sometimes called the pass key, or smart key, you won't be able to have another key make that will work. You can have another key made that will fit the ignition switch, but if you use it,it will trigger the anti theft system and you won't be able to start your car, even with the crrect key.You can have a bypass system installed that will enable you to use any key, but it will disable the security system. Go to a website called "newrockies". They have an affordable bypass system that works.
If the key is one that is coded to the ignition you would only be able to get the spare at a dealership. If you go to Walmart and ask for a duplicate key they will check if they have one that will do it. If they have a key available it most likely is not a coded key. If they don't make sure to ask if it is a key they don't carry or if they are just out of that particular model key at the moment. If they don't carry that key it is a coded key and you will have to go to the dealer.
