1 Does it give the normal little charge up whine when you turn it on?

2 Are the battery terminals clean?

3. Double check with new out of the packet top quality Duracel or Energiser batteries. Don't waste your time testing anything like this with mediocre or average batteries.

4. If you have to ask if you could fit new capacitors yourself, the answer is DEFINITELY NOT. These caps are not like on a computer motherboard: These can stop your heart.

5 Some of the big camera shops can give you a free repair quote, or if not will deduct the cost of a declined quote from the price of a new flash.

Anyway, good luck.

Something inside popped when I fired it up after several years

Likely the capacitor that stores the electricity used to make the flash. Replacement may be more expensive than the flash itself.

No light meter on Vivitar V3800N

It may be that the batteries that came with the camera are dead. Double check the way you have them installed, both cells should have the positive side up as they sit in the cap. It is best to handle button cell batteries on the round edges rather than the flat sides. The battery cap for your camera should have open slots on the sides so you can place the batteries in using those openings

Using a vivitar 2800 flash on a nikon d60

The old series Vivitar 2800 flashgun has a very high trigger Voltage, that can damage your D60's circuitry. Even measuring the trigger voltage with a voltmeter is not a solution since you can't rely on the voltmeter to indicate the peak voltage.

My advice ,if i were you, would be to leave the batteries in for a day and leave your unit turned on. either leave the cap on, or put it in a closet and see if it works better. The new AAA batteries should be fine i'm sure you have how to put the four in correct, and yes they are all that's needed. But leaving your unit on for the day will do a few things. First, it puts a current through all of the working components, i.e. light gathering elements and your infrared components. They may "wake up" from being on and they may not. But at the very worst you are only out the cost of four triple A's.
