Question about Sony Handycam DCR-VX1000 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
I have had a Sony VX-1000 for the last five years and up until now have had no problems. I have used exclusively JVC tapes. Last month I noticed that every few seconds on the tape there would be macro block errors [square pixelated blocks] and the sound would also cut out. I figure there head needed cleaning, so I bought the Sony Head cleaner as per the manual (DVM-12CLD) and followed the instructions (up to four times for ten seconds, pop in the cleaning tape and hit play, record on a regular miniDV to see if it worked) - to no avail.
Here is my quandry:
Do you think it really is the head that needs cleaning, is bad?
Is there something else I can try to fix this?
I called the Sony Service number, and someone who did not really comprehend what I was saying (could have been a language issue) stated that for audio cutting out, it would cost $560 to fix it. That is nearly 50% of what the camera costs now - do I have any other option?
Can I contact someone locally (Raleigh, NC) - how do I find them?
Thanks in advance.

SOURCE: Tape Cleaning on-screen warning
Depending on the age of the camera/cassette, it may be that the heads are not just dirty, but are actually worn down. The gray bars are the DV equivalent of snow - data has been lost or at least cannot be displayed. If cleaning doesn't solve the problem, the heads probably need replacing. Depending on the age of the camera, it may be more cost effective to upgrade to a new camera.
