Question about Dell Dimension 8200 PC Desktop

Will This Hard Drive Work In My Dell 8200?

The 80 gig Maxtor D740X-6L on my six year old 8200 went to hard drive heaven a couple of days ago.
Made the clicking noise, froze up, and all the kings soldiers and all the kings men (and Dell) couldn't get Humpty the hard drive to work again.

Did a complete back up a couple days before, so okay on data.

Since my big ol' Dell glass tube monitor was starting to get long in the tooth and all, I had been pricing new monitors and new PC's, so I bought a new Dell at Best Buy and went on with life.

Still, the 8200 ain't shappy as far as speed and all, and mine was loaded down with improved video cards, burners, firewire, USB 2.0, etc.

So, for not much money, I want to replace the hard drive with another one, and have a second PC to use for the spousal unit.

I am loooking at this one:

Western Digital Caviar 160 gig Internal hard drive.

Uses the Ultra ATA/100 interface.
Is it compatible with the 8200?

If not what is the least expensive HD that will meet or exceed what my old one did.

From what I'm seeing, I put the rails on my new one, slide it back in, plug it back in, set jumpers (this is the only hard drive in the PC) boot it up with the CD's that I so wisely put in it's own CD billfold, and reinstall.

Yes it will work. You probably will have to use the CD that came with the drive to make sure the HD is recognized.

My maxtor D740X-6l 40GB drive will not boot up. I can hook the drive up to another computer and read the files but it will not even show as a drive on the original computer. The first computer recognizes...

all you have to do is to simply set the jumper at the back of he hard disk, beside where the IDE cable and power enter into the hard disk.

Just keep setting till you put at the right position where the system recognizes it.

There is nothing wrong with your PC and hard drive, just set the jumper of the Hard disk and that should be all.

Take care.

Maxtor D740X-6L 40 GB drive won't start up.

Put your windows xp disc in the drive and boot up from it, run windows repair or failing that reinstall on the upgrade option to keep your files and programs.
If that fails, you will have to do a full instal.

on the hard drive is a pic showing you how. the maxtors are pretty complicated but still solveable. if you are using one cable for two devices (hard disks/ cdroms) one has to be master and the other slave. cable select doesnt always work that well with different vendor products
