my computer does not read my simpletech simpledrive external 320 gb hard drive what can I do? Do I need to donwload a software? if so how do I do that?

  • Homam Jul 27, 2008

My external Digital Research 320 G external drive just flashes. The computer does not see it. Started after a power failure. The drive was on but the computer was off. Suspect a hardware failure.

I had this problem - flashing light, disk not recognised - and found it was the power supply that was at fault. It turns out that failure of LaCie transformers is very common; they will replace faulty units.

Most of the time its the pcb which is responsible for not detection of hd in any system
also one should take into account
1 cables should be good
2 powersupply should be good
3 controller card should not be faulty.
4 any primary master slave conflict should be solved.
the suggestions in 1 2 3 4 are essential before testing a hard drive.

later a bootable cd or floppy drive helps to make us do a scandisk
or a fdisk .
if fdisk reports no hdd or fixed disks then one should be vigilant that the drive may have been lost mbr or boot recotds

Why doesn't my Verbatim "clip

click start right click on computer select properties then device manager scroll to universal serial bus controllers if you se a yellow question exclamation mark ? ! or a red X you will need to update/reinstall drivers right click select update drivers
once inserted windows 7 should automatically install the drivers
if you computer came with a motherboard disk the drivers could be on it

if you can see your usb drive but its not working
ports(com&lpt)right click update driver
if this fails to fix the problem check the usb leads inside your computer usually

usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems for a computer and its parts
hope this helps you

My computer doesn't recognize my dane-elec 8gb usb stick , although other usb devices do work.

1. Try a different USB port. If other ports recognize it, then the original port is fried. 2. Try a different computer. If the other computer does not recognize it, then your flash drive is damaged.

Good Luck!

Have a Samsung G2 640GB external hard drive, have been using it fine. Just out of the blue when I wanted to access the data on it the PC (XP OS) told me it was not formatted and would I like to format it...

Hello,
You might try plugging it into another USB port, then go into the control panel / administrative tools / Computer Management. If you see the Disk Name / Drive Letter in there, try right clicking it and selecting Properties from the menu. Click the Tools tab and press the button for check disk for errors. Make sure the check box is selected that says Automatically Fix File System Errors. Press ok and let it do its magic. If it finds any errors that could cause the drive to become unusable, it will attempt to fix it.
If you can't get that far, you might try plugging it into another computer if you have one. If that still doesn't work, you may have a failed device. It may be possible to recover the data on it but at a premium price with less then 40% chance of success. (It all depends if its a main board crash, head crash or physical damage to the platters)
Regards, Chris

The external hard drive isn't being read from the computer. Sometimes, the hardware will light up and sometimes it doesn't. The computer is not able to detect the hard drive. Please advise.

If your computer or laptop has a problem detecting a USBhard drive or a USB device, and another computer can detect it, then theproblem could be a RF interference problem. Try using an USB cable that is a shielded USB cable (ie. AnUSB cable that has a clear plastic covering and you can see a metallic weavewhich covers the wires) OR a USB cable that has a Ferrite core attached to theUSB cable (the ferrite core is a cylindrical object approximately 30mm long X15mm diameter and it is attached to the USB cable near the connector).

plug it again and if it doesn't work at all try other USB port. A USB flash drive nowadays supports only 2.0 and above USB ports. It all about signal speed a USB 2.0 and above were backward compatible with USB 1.1 .

Hi ...

When that happen try going into the device manager area >>> start >>>
control panel >>>system >>> hardware tab >>> device manager , now notice
your usb controllers area , its mostly likely open and if so ?
See if you notice a little yellow exclamation mark http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exclamation_mark by it , if so , right click on it
and select delete , then highlight your computer name http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naming_scheme on the very top of the
devise manager , select " Action " and then select " scan for hardware
changes , at this point your compute should now notice your usb devise , by
the way make sure when you are performing this that your usb devise is plug
in , See if that helps.

Else refer to this website http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbtrouble_e.html
This site every issue related to USB device.
I am sure this will surely fix your problem.

Thanx for using fixya,
Bye.
