most of the time its the pcb which is responsible for not detection of hd in any system
also one should take into account
1 cables should be good
2 powersupply should be good
3 controller card should not be faulty.
4 any primary master slave conflict should be solved.
the suggestions in 1 2 3 4 are essential before testing a hard drive.
later a bootable cd or floppy drive helps to make us do a scandisk
or a fdisk .
if fdisk reports no hdd or fixed disks then one should be vigilant that the drive may have been lost mbr or boot recotds

I had this problem - flashing light, disk not recognised - and found it was the power supply that was at fault. It turns out that failure of LaCie transformers is very common; they will replace faulty units.
