Check your monitor documentation whether it supports said resolution. May be you have to search for updated display drivers.

How do I set the resolution, screen posts a box saying for best results use 1680 x 1050@60HZ, how can I set this?

Hello,
In XP goto the control panel and click display. Select the Settings tab and move the screen resolution bar to the right until it says 1680x1050.
Vista should be similar to the XP instructions.
In windows 7 goto the control panel and click display. Select Adjust Resolution from the menu to the left. Now adjust the display setting to 1680x1050.

I cannot install the driver for Viewsonic VX2235wm (XP pro) Cannot select 1680x1050 res for this monitor

Well your LCD supports 1680x1050 resolution.
You have to check the video/ graphics card of your PC, if it supports the same resolution or not. Let me know the model no. and your motherboard details for a better assistance.

Looking forward for your response

Width and height ratio

You need to set your PC video output resolution to the native resolution of this monitor, which is 1680X1050 @60Hz.
Right click on the desk top, the display properties will come up, click on setting tab, then you will see resolution setting choice.

The text on my screen is too stretched and unfocused

Hello,
Make sure that you are running at the recommended resolution for your monitor. for example, and 20" widescreen should be at a 1680x1050 res

you may need to update your drivers and or video card to achieve a widescreen resolution.

Acer x213W - setting the resolution

Sorry about the delay. I also just purchased an Acer x213w and had some trouble setting up my computer in order to achieve the optimum resolution of 1680x1050.

I'm using an HP Pavilion m7170n, so it's a bit old and thus could not support this widescreen resolution. However, my computer comes with an ATI Radeon graphics card and, upon contacting HP Support, was allowed to download ATI's "Catalyst Control Centre". After installation, these drivers added the option of selecting a screen resolution of 1680x1050 from Desktop properties.

So this is my solution to you: simply google your graphics card along with 1680x1050 driver and hopefully you'll be able to download a driver update which does the same for you as it did for me.

Acer al2016w monitor

when you say you have it plugged into the on-board video output.. does that mean there is a graphics card installed too? used to be graphics card installed? if there is or was then its possible that there is a bois setting that tells your computer to use the existent or non-existent graphics card. either was your onboard is going to shut down. This is one theory.. but since its is turning off once you get to your desk top the more likely reason is that its software based and you either have the wrong resolution, driver, or refresh rate selected to use when windows boots. Toy around with diffrent resolutions, refresh rates, also if you have a graphics card plug it into that. your on board most certinly will not be enabled if you have a graphics card.

VGA MODE in vista:

Restart the computer and immediately start pressing the F8 key, once per second. At the selection screen, use the up/down keys to select "Enable VGA Mode", then press the "Enter" key.. If it works, it will bring up the basic VGA drivers in "normal" Windows and should allow you to install the Vista compatible drivers for your new card. After installing the new drivers, restart the computer and if it remains in VGA, you should then be able to adjust the resolution, etc. from the "Display Properties".

You could check your DPI setting in the display, being a large monitor your DPI setting shoul be up around the 75 - 85 Hertz.
To access this
Control Panel --> Display --> Settings --> Advanced --> Monitor and then click the drop down box and see what the DPI is set to and keep trying the different options until it is clear.
Hope this helps.
