While turning in off softely press the lense in and out a couple of times. The lense would retract. If not fully, but most of the way, push the lense a little harder in until completely retract. If you turn it on, I should work fine. The reason the lense does not retract is most likely some dust in there somewhere. If it did not help, you would have to open the lense and clean it and close the lense.

I hope it helps,

Hi. I had exactly the same problem with my Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W7. The problem started after, while lense was fully open, the battery got 100% empty. I did not have access to new batteries and did not have my charger with me so I put the camera on my car seat and went home. After charging the batteries, I turned the camera Off and the lense retracted 100%. Later on I tried to transfer some pictures to my PC. After connecting the camera to my PC with the dial in the P position and lense fully open I turned the dial to play in order to transfer photos. After transferring the pictures, I turned the camera off and disconnected from the computer.

I turn the camera on to take new pictures next day, The lense would go up, down and turn with lense almost fully open whether I turn the camera on or off. when I turned it off the lense would go up, down and turn. It would never retract. When I turned the camera on, the lense would go up, down and turn. The screen was black with a message "Turn the camera on and off again". I tried 30 times or more and the same thing would happen again.

Here is what I did to fix my camera and it has been working normally since then.

1- I cleaned around the outside of the lense with lent free cloth

2- I used dust OFF to get raid of the remaining small dust particles from around the lense.

3- While turning the camera off, I pushed the lense down, up and turn.( I followed the lense motion exactly.) If you push the lense too hard or hold it, you may damage the mechanicall moving parts of the lense.

4- After a few tries, the lense retracted 90% +. I then pushed the lense a little harder all the way in, the way it normall retracts. The lense cover also closed 100%.

5- I turned the Camera on and off a few times. It was opening and closing exactly the way it used to. My Cybershot has been working okay since then.

I read a lot and here is what I think caused my lense to malfunction.

While lense was fully open and battery died, some small dust particles got on the side of the lense and prevented lense from fully opening or closing.

In summery: two things could have caused your camera lense to malfunction.

1- if you had dropped your camera hard, some mechanical parts may have got damaged or dislocated. In this case you have to open the lense and replace the damaged part, clean and put it back on the camera. This is too risky for most ordinary people. You would most likely make it WORST.

2- If you did not drop it, most likly, some how some small dust particles got on the outside of the lense and they prevent the lense or the lense cover from fully opening and closing. If this is your case, please follow exactly what I did and your camera would be back to normal.

    GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If your lens is stuck on your Sony Cyber-shot digital camera you will have the "E:61" error or another message saying "Access" or "Turn camera off and then on again" or "Lens error, restart camera".

The lens needs to be taken apart and cleaned, then rebuilt and put back in the camera. Hopefully this will fix the problem! It will not fix the problem if there is damage to the lens or gears, in that case the lens needs to be repaired or replaced.

Most places will want to charge you around $200 for this repair! I've spent years building a business to HELP people repair their cameras as cheaply as possible; if we can help please let us know.

Good luck from: Darntoothysam com

I had the exact same problem.  I used canned air to try to clean the unretracted lens and that worked.  Thanks, Darntoothysam!

I have a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W310 I trun it on it reads Turn the power off and on again WhenI do this it still reads the same thing

It seems you're having problems with the lens sticking (either not retracting or retracting then coming out then going back again, etc.) This "off, then on" problem is caused by some little cogs around the lens that easily slip out of place in this camera. The camera has trouble sensing if the lens is in or out, which is why it keeps asking you to turn it off then on again.

One solution is to give the camera a firm tap around the lens area. I don't necessarily recommend that since those cogs in there are obviously delicate. Other than that, repair is going to require opening up the camera and setting those little things back into place. I know that isn't the answer you wanted to hear, but it seems to be the only one. Please don't forget to rate me if satisfied.Thank you.

On the screen shows turn off and then turn on again and again-it does not turns on any way

Hi,

The Turn off and on again error message displays when there is an internal malfunction or a malfunction with the Lens. The error message normally displays with the issue with the Lens. Try the following steps to check if the issue can be resolved.
Try power resetting the Camera.
Turn off the Camera.
Remove the battery pack.
Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
Then, allow the Camera to remain without power for 60 seconds.
Re-insert the battery pack and check if the Lens retracts.
You can also try resetting the Camera back to factory default. To reset the Camera back to factory default, select the INITIALIZE option from the Setup 1 Menu of the Camera to OK. (Menu-->Setup-->Setup 1-->Initialize-->OK.)

This should resolve the issue. If the issue persists, service may be required.

Thanks for using FixYa.

I have sony dsc w7 digital camera.some reason my camera lens broken. I would like to ask if i can get new lens to buy. please mail me

Part number of lens assembly of Sony DSC-W7 is as follows..
A-1105-719-A LENS BLOCK ASSY (890C (J1))
Available in Part Store.
New camera would be better choice as lens assembly is high cost part.

The zoom lens does not retract on dsc-w1/w12

I've had the same problem on rare occasion. Usually, I just wait a few seconds, then turn the camera on... wait a few more secs, turn off... repeat as necessary. When all that doesn't work, I've replaced with new batteries & the problem is solved.

Off and on problem with a Sony Cybershot DSC-W35

you have to open the cage of the camara gently & the put the betteries, then if you are catching the cam. from the screen side, you can see on the left side the wheel of the lences, in the same moment you are turning the cam, move that wheel with a little knife or anything you have, it will work.

Turn the power on and off again

I fixed this issue with my Sony Cybershot by gently (carefully) hitting the camera 3 times against a carpeted bench with the lens retracted and the camera turned off. It seems the lens gears were stuck. Now the camera works fine again.
