Question about Dishwashers

3 Answers

Upper spray arm is not turning round even though water is coming through. We have checked the internal system for blockages and the machine is filling / draining as normal. When a full programme is run, many of the dishes, particularly on the top shelf, are dirty and many have hardly been touched by water. Could a pump or other part be faulty?

I have removed the spray arm and soaked in vinegar to remove hard water deposits. I can see through the arm so it is not blocked but it still won't turn.

I found the problem to be neither blockages of the upper arm or roof spray arm or the upper basket arm hitting the the back of the dishwasher. the problem was that the pump inlet where the food scraps are macerated was blocked with all manner of gunge including small chicken bones plastic and other detritus. Removal of the macerator housing under the upper filter housing using 2 different sizes of torx driver easily fixed the problem. Probably why the upper dish rack cleaning degraded overtime, Directly proportional to the amount of detritus blocking the intake screen behind the macerator.upper spray arm is not - 17a8801.jpgb9e8fa8.jpg789f2b8.jpgfb7a626.jpgator. Yup, this was the fix for me. The upper arm went from low flow and no turning to high flow and slow turning. Better yet, the lower arm went from low flow (not reaching the dishwasher ceiling) and normal turning to firehoses and normal turning! The upper arm turns about 1/4 the speed of the lower arm. Maybe this is normal. Thanks so much for posting this solution with the great photos! Most of the gunk was undissolved detergent clogging the 4 holes in the macerator housing (upper right of last photo). Recommend also putting 2 cups of vinegar in a bowl and running it through a normal wash as described in the manual.

Thank you!!!!! The grinder had come apart and the intake screen was completely clogged. Cleaned screen and reassembled grinder. Seems to be working fine. Day was a wash overall - spent $600 on car repair, saved $600 on new dishwasher :) .

I found that the end bottom angled jets of my upper arm was rubbing the pipe that enters the water feed tube at the back of the dishwasher. When you push the upper rack in and close the door, the angle created between the upper rack (which holds the upper arm) and the tube that enters the water feed tube blocks that upper arms and won't spin freely. To check if that can be the case, remove the lower rack and start your dishwasher. After the water fills up the dishwasher, let it run for a 5-10 seconds and open the door quickly. Check if the bottom angled jets of the upper arm rubs the entering pipe as the position of the upper arm will be facing the door. You can try it a few other times by moving the upper arms in another position and turn your dishwasher on again (keep the water in for faster troubleshooting - don't drain after each time). If the upper arm is still facing the door, you found your problem.

Fixing it can be difficult, but I did something that did fix it temporarily. I pulled out the upper rack and try to bend it down slowly a bit to open the angle created between the upper arm and the pipe entering the water feed tube. It's working fine for now, but will be watching it on a regular basis.

Good luck!

The arm rotated by water jetting thro angled jets at each end. even if other jets in arm are ok, if the end jets are blocked, the arm will not rotate. best to take the arm out and run water thro the middle hole

Water fills the bottom of dishwasher, lower spray arm still seems to turn/spray but no movement or water coming out of uppoer spray arm. We took apart the lines to see if there was blockage -- none.

If there is no blockage, your pump may need to be rebuilt or replaced. If your machine uses a solenoid valve to control weather the pump is washing or draining. The drain valve may be stuck somewhat open, diverting wash water down the drain. Or the wash valve may be not opening fully. Different machines work in different ways.

Top spray arm does not turn during wash or turns slightly..it is free of clogs and spins freely by hand

It will spin freely by hand, but needs to spray water out of the jets at the trailing edge of the arm. Check inside the arm for blockage and make sure that water is getting to the upper arm from the pump.

Apparently no water pressure to upper washing arm.

Hi sounds like there is a blockage in the circulation pump which causes low water pressure as it cannot push the water around. You would have to remove the unit and turn on it's side and remove the circulation pump to clear the blockage.

Also check all the holes in your spray arms for any blockages. Best to remove each arm and clean in the sink. Any blockages causes the arms not to turn.

Lower spray arm siemens aquastop dishwasher doesn't rotate

Sprayers require water to pass through the jets to provide motion to the arms.

Suggestion;

Remove the sprayer from the machine and look for blockages. (Removal should be easy, at it is expected that the user will need to clean the jets occasionally; If you have any problems removing it, consult your manual).

Water is not coming out of upper spray arms

Remove lower basket completly put a bag around the arm that goes to the back of the machine (this will stop water going to the lower arm. Put the lower basket back into the machine and set the rinse cycle, this should clear the blockage if it does not your in trouble!

LG LDS5811WW Low pressure out of spray arms

On the LG LDF xxxx dishwasher family, the Vario feature uses a motor/check valve to switch between "full power" cleaning from _either_ the lower or the upper spray arms, never at the same time. So, not seeing the upper arm spin during the lower arm spinning is standard operating procedure.

But back to your problem. Step one would be to remove the filter assembly again and make certain that there is nothing (debris, broken glass) blocking the white areas where the check valve rotates to switch between upper/lower spray arms. A blockage there ~could~ cause impotent spraying/cleaning.

If there is no blockage and the impeller remains in good shape, suspect a failing wash pump motor. Try to isolate the noise to that motor.

Watch for error codes on the display and report back what you find, OK?

Good Luck!

Water not spraying hard enough

Could be a a couple different issues.. Not filling with enough water or food chopper broke or food chopper filter screen clogged.

Check water level:
Run the DW and wait for the main wash to start (water will fill. pause then complete fill) The water should be no more than 1/4 inch below the heating element. If not there..replace water inlet valve.

Inspect food chopper:
Remove lower spray arm and rear water supply tube to upper spray arm. Remove torx screws that secure the sump cover. Remove the rounded cover on the left side to expose the chopper assembly. Inspect for breakage of blockage. There may be an additional plastic screen to remove first.

Spray arm does not move

the spray arm is moved by water spraying out of angled jets at the end of the arm. the mostly cause of no rotation is these jets being blocked - its not always obvious. remove spray arm and run water into centre hole and see if you can see anything blocking the jets

arms should turn freely. spray arms are only rotated by water spraying out from angled jets at end. check for blockage in spray arms - sweet corn and rice are the worst offenders. take spray arms off and run water in centre hole and see it runs out of all the jets freely
