Problem for Hitachi 53UWX10B 53 in. Rear Projection Television

Hitachi 53UWX10B "double vision"

The customer described this symptom as above adding that the center of
the screen looks fairly ok but the top and bottom is mostly affected.
if I had to guess I would say that it sounds like a dynamic convergence
problem but I've been burned on trying to do these in home convergence
repairs before so I'm not jumping into this one without (hopefully)
some help. I asked him if the convergence screen comes up and works at
all and he says that when he selects "magic focus" he gets a 3. Does
any of this make any sense? I would like to start doing some more in
home service on large screens as the smaller set work is drying up but
I'm not familiar with this set or these symptoms at all. Does this
sound like anything familiar on this set and fixable in the home?
Thanks very much for any assistance. Lenny Stein, Barlen Electronics

-   I have almost the same problem, it just happened yesterday. i was watching tv then left for a few hours then came back and noticed that the screen was blurry. after further inspection it seemed like the red color had shifted by varying lengths over different areas of the screen. i activated the magic focus and it sailed through the green and blue and got to the red screen and three little bars show up and it just stays like that for about 30 seconds like it is trying to fix something then the screen goes black and a green number 4 shows up in the lower right hand corner. any suggestions as to what happened and how to fix it would really be a tremendous help
thanks

The "3" is an error code from the aborted magic focus attempt.
You likely need to replace the STKs, and carefully check for burned low
value resistors right off the STKs as Art suggested.  Most of the time
the resistors are OK, but if they are smoked, they need to be exact in
value.

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Solution #1

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

Solution #2

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

Convergence output ICs, maybe a couple of low value resistors, possible a
DCU with complete setup requiring an overlay for proper setup. Hard to say
with the lack of diagnostics you have posted.
