Master Boot Record

MBR Short for <i><b>M</b>aster <b>B</b>oot <b>R</b>ecord,</i> a small <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/program.html">program</a> that is executed when a computer <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/B/boot.html">boots up</a>. Typically, the MBR resides on the first <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/S/sector.html">sector</a> of the <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/H/hard_disk.html">hard disk</a>. The program begins the boot process by looking up the partition table to determine which <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/P/partition.html">partition</a> to use for booting. It then transfers program control to the <i>boot sector</i> of that partition, which continues the boot process. In <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/DOS.html">DOS</a> and <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Windows.html">Windows</a> systems, you can create the MBR with the FDISK /MBR command. <br /> An <i>MBR virus</i> is a common type of <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/V/virus.html">virus</a> that replaces the MBR with its own code. Since the MBR executes every time a computer is started, this type of virus is extremely dangerous. MBR viruses normally enter a system through a <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/floppy_disk.html">floppy disk</a> that is installed in the <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/F/floppy_drive.html">floppy drive</a> when the computer is started up. Even if the floppy disk is not <a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/B/bootable_diskette.html">bootable</a>, it can infect the MBR. <br />

Server boot

ntldr is part of the Master boot Record (MBR) it is used in conjunction with other files to allow the OS to interact with the Kernel.

you can copy the MBR record but it is specific to each PC so your options are rebuild server or restore from a backup I would recommend back up as all additional settings will be applied still.

After reading the BIOS software, my Gateway CX200X gives the message: MBR error. what is this?

MBR stands for Master Boot Record. It is an essential piece of information written on the Hard Drive that allows the program to load. If the MBR is corrupted the computer boot process cannot proceed.
You have to repair it.
On old systems with a floppy drive you would get a Win98 boot disk on a floppy, boot the system using the A:drive (floppy) then use a DOS command to refresh the Master Boot Record.
If your system is using Windows XP tablet PC edition you might be able to use the installation disk to boot to the recovery console and use the command FIXBOOT or FIXMBR. You can also reinstall the Operating System.
I hope this answer gave you some starting point to investigate further. There are on the web some software vendors who sell system recuperation CDs. Some may be free other you have to buy.

MRB Error message on Gateway laptop 6510GZ. how can we resolve?

First of all I'm not this smart. I found it and pasted it here for you from:
http://www.pcpowerguide.com/windows/damaged-mbr-error-message/

They get all the credit!

MBR is the acronym for Master Boot Record. The master boot record is located in the boot section of your hard drive, which is the first sector on the first platter. When you boot your computer, the master boot record tells the computer's BIOS (Basic Input Output System) where to find the bootstrap code for the operating system.
So if the MBR is corrupted, the BIOS can't find the operating system and you can get error messages like the following ones:
  • Missing operating system
  • Error loading system
  • Invalid partition table
Looks pretty scary, doesn't it?
However, it is usually not that hard to fix a corrupted MBR and usually the rest f the hard drive is just fine and will boot normally once your fix the master boot record.
What Causes Damage to the MBR? A lot of things can cause damage to the MBR such as viruses designed to corrupt the boot sector. Some of them copy the original MBR to another file. Others do this by overwriting the MBR with virus code. In fact viruses and malware are one of the most frequent causes but, any file can become corrupted especially files that are accessed as frequently as the MBR.
How to Fix the MBR The stapes to fix the MBR are slightly different in the different versions of Windows. So I will cover them separately.
Windows XP
  1. Insert your XP installation disk in the CD-Rom and reboot the computer
  2. When asked, press any key to boot from the CD
  3. When you get the Welcome to Setup screen, press "R" to open the repair console
  4. Enter your administrator password when prompted
  5. At the command prompt, type fixmbr and press enter
  6. When a new command prompt appears, type exit
  7. Remove your installation CD
  8. Restart the computer
Windows Vista
  1. Insert your Vista installation disk in the CD-ROM and reboot the computer
  2. When asked, press any key to boot from the CD
  3. When you get the Install Windows screen, fill in the language and location options and then click Next
  4. Click on the Repair your computer option
  5. Select the Windows Vista operating system and click Next
  6. Enter your administrator password when prompted
  7. In the System Recovery Options, select Command Prompt
  8. When a command prompt appears, type bootrec.exe and press enter to fix the MBR
  9. When a new command prompt appears, type exit
  10. Remove your installation CD
  11. Click Restart in the System Recovery Options window
Windows 7
  1. Insert your Windows 7 installation disk in the CD-ROM and reboot the computer
  2. When asked, press any key to boot from the CD
  3. When you get the Install Windows screen, fill in the language, Time and Keyboard Input options and then click Next
  4. Click on the Repair your computer option
  5. In the System Recovery Options, select Command Prompt
  6. When a command prompt appears, change to the boot directory
  7. Now type bootsect /nt60 SYS and press enter to fix the MBR
  8. When a new command prompt appears, type exit
  9. Remove your installation CD
  10. Reboot the computer

While recovering my laptop 2910tx from recovery cd i got an error 0x4001100200001005. what should i do? install another version os, or other way?/

Since you didn't give much info I'll do my best. Did the error tell you that it couldn't find an operating system? Driver?
Reboot and enter "set up" change the boot order in the BIOS so that your cd/dvd is the first boot device. If you computer isn't destroyed you should get the recovery console then. Try getting into safe mode if possible and doing a system restore, or last known good configuration if you can't restore. If you can boot try those first if not then use the console and try to fix mbr.
MBR stands for Master Boot Record and it's the first sector of your hard drive that basically tells the BIOS where to look for the operating system on your computer.
If, for any reason, the MBR becomes damaged or corrupt, then the operating system will be unable to load. You will normally see error messages like:
Error loading operating system
Missing operating system
Invalid partition table
These messages are definitely not fun, especially if you are not familiar with computers. Most people would automatically assume their computers are dead! However, that's not true. Being in IT myself, these errors are actually preferably to other types of Windows errors. Why?
Well, it's actually fairly easy to fix the Master Boot Record in XP and Vista. All you have to do is load up the Recovery Console and run a simple command. All of your data, applications, settings, etc are still intact on the drive and once the MBR is fixed, the computer will load normally.
So how can you repair your damaged MBR? Here are the steps to follow:

1. First, restart your computer with the Windows XP setup disk in the CD drive.
2. When prompted, boot from the CD drive by pressing any key. If Windows loads automatically, you will first have to enter the BIOS setup and change the order of the boot devices to start with the CD drive.
3. Once the setup loads, you will see the option to press R to repair a Windows installation.
4. Once the Recovery Console loads up, you will have to type in a number that corresponds to your Windows installation. This is normally just 1. Press Enter and then type in the Administrator password.
5. Now at the prompt, type in fixmbr. Your damaged MBR will now be replaced with a new master boot record and your computer should now be able to boot properly. Note that you may also want to run the fixboot command to repair the boot sector with a new one.
Also, make sure you only use these commands on a system with one operating system installed. If you have more than one operating system installed, fixmbr and fixboot could mess up everything.
Fix MBR in Vista
In Vista (I'm assuming you have Vista) the procedure to fix the master boot record is a bit different. You have to start up Vista in the Recovery Environment and then run the bootrec command. Here's how.

1. First, load up the Windows Vista disc in your drive and press any key to boot from the disc.
2. Choose the language, time, currency, etc and click Next. Now click on Repair Your Computer.
3. Choose the operating system to repair and click Next. When the System Recovery Options dialog comes up, choose the Command Prompt.
4. Now type bootrec.exe and press Enter. This will rebuild the boot configuration data and hopefully fix your problem. You can also run the command with switches to fix just the master boot record (/fixmbr), the boot sector (/fixboot), or rebuild the entire BCD (/rebuildbcd).

Hope this helps.
If this helps you resolve your problem, please
consider giving me a good rating and a quick
"thanks" or "good job".It will help me as well.
Thank you.

Hi,
This is addressed on IDE ATA drives... (1) - Have you tried a different IDE cable? If not give it a go and do a repair if needed again!.....

(2) - You may have a corrupt MBR (master boot record)!! You will need to reformat and do Fdisk /mbr to delete the master boot record!! Save all data first as this will not allow you to access any of your data as all file location addresses are located in the MBR!!

.....(3) - Your harddrive may have a bad sector get a zerofill tool(low level formatting tool)!! This will rewrite you HD's sectors putting them back to factory spec's!! Maxtors is called Maxblast you can get it from thier site!!

....(4) - or it could be a defective drive, but most read errors are due ot corrupt MBR or a bad sector!!

Hope this has helped you... Please rate the answer... thanks...

Computer will not start and comes up with boot missing any ideas

That means that something is wrong with your Master Boot Record (MBR). If you have a Windows install CD put that in and then boot the machine, do a repair install of Windows. It will fix your MBR and you won't loose any data.
