Did the computer come with Norton Anti virus on it, as a trial?, and then maybe you didnt use it and got mcafee instead and didnt remove the norton.

That could produce the symptoms you're saying.

Also, if your computer only has 512 mb of ram, and you added ANY software, then you do not have enough memory to run the system. It will be slow and freeze at times and have to reboot.

Dell inspiron one touch screen stuck in diagnostic mode

HI,
You were correct in pressing ctrl+f11 but perhaps you did not press at the correct time. If in following these first two steps you do not get the recovery console, it may not have been installed on your computer.

1 Turn on the computer.
2 When the Dell splash screen appears during the computer startup process, press and hold <Ctrl> and then press <F11>. Then, release both keys at the same time.
3 In the Dell PC Restore by Symantec window, clickRestore. Alternatively, press <Tab> to highlightRestore, and then press <Enter>.
4 When a warning message appears stating that all data will be lost, click Confirm, or press <Tab> to highlight Confirm and then press <Enter>.

The Progress window will appear. Once the restore process starts, Dell PC Restore by Symantec usually takes about 8 to 10 minutes to finish.

When the restore process is complete, the following message will appear:
The system recovery process was successful.
5 Click Finish or press <Tab> to highlight Finish and then press <Enter> to restart the computer.
The software is now installed as it was when the computer was first received.
Thanks.

Reset bios

Installing a fresh operating system is a good option, and there might be a feature in the BIOS to restore the system to factory defaults. Information on how to do this:

Windows XP: Dell PC Restore

Using PC Restore:

1. Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top
of the screen.

2. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish
starting, and then restart the computer again.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot.

3. Click Restore and click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6 to 10 minutes to complete.

4. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer
completely reboot.

5. When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts.

Because the computer is restored to its original
operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License
Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer
was turned on.

6. Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.

7. After the computer restarts, click OK.

Gateway gt5453e constantly freeze or fun slow

If you have more than one virus protection program installed, get rid of all but one - they'll fight each other for system resources. Windows security programs need a lot of resources, so make sure you have at least 1.5 GB of RAM installed.
I would bet that if you look at the hard drive light when the machine is slow or seemingly stalled, it will be on almost continuously, meaning the system is spending a lot of time waiting for the hard drive. You can check this by typing <ctrl>-<alt>-<del> to open Task Manager, then clicking the Performance tab to check on drive and CPU activity.
Windows XP is pretty much broken on older machines - it is too overloaded with security patches to run well with most anti-virus programs. Upgrade to Windows 7 if you can afford it (but make sure you have at least 2 GB RAM installed, maxing out at 4 GB is better).

Acer Aspire t690 Desktop Freezes or reboots with in minutes of start up...Running Windows Vista. Help???

It is possible that your computer is overheating and is shutting down to prevent it from doing any harm to itself.
Make sure that all fans are clean, there must be no dust present as it hinders airflow!!!
Install as many fans as possible. Computer temps should be in the region of 30-40 degrees centigrade. To avoid CPU throttling, where the CPU slows down to prevent frying itself.
Please take the time to rate my expertise.
Thanks

My pc.. desktop is very slow.. its a windows vista

You may want to look into upgrading your RAM if there is less than 2GB installed. This is a recommendation that I have found in working with several PC's running this Operating System. Also, you would want to run disk clean up and remove any temporary files that Windows finds. Deleting any other temporary or unused files from your PC on a regular basis should increase system performance. In addition, if these steps do not solve your problem, you may want to consider upgrading to a faster performance hard drive (preferably a SATA II with a 32MB cache). As a last resort, you may look at your CPU to see if there is an upgrade for it, as well. Keep in mind that Vista is a resource hog and can slow down a PC within just a short period of time.

Dell DIM. 3000 PC very slow & freezes up at times.

There are several reasons for a slow computer:
  1. Processor speed
  2. Memory size
  3. Too many program running
If your computer used to run fine, then it could be that there is too much running now for it to handle, in which case either a cleanup or upgrade (or both) is in order. Based on the specs from the CNET website, the Dimension 3000 comes with a Celeron D 2.4 GHz processor and 256MB of RAM (Memory).

If this is the case, then your memory needs to be upgraded at the very minimum. Anything less than 1 GB (1024 MB) just doesn't cut it anymore.

I would also HIGHLY suggest looking at the programs you have running in the system tray (bottom right corner of the screen) to see how many programs you have running, you might check to see if all of those are necessary.
