Question about Nintendo DS Lite Console

Games have stopped playing on Nintendon DS Lite

I purchased a brnad new Nintendo DS Lite for my daughter last October on Ebay from Hong Kong. We are Austraian residents. It came with 5 games (game boy advance games my daughter tells me) and we bought some other ones here in Australia, All seemed well until about two months ago when all games except those for Gameboy Advance, stopped playing on the DS. We asked out local games store who said it was because the machine was from Hong Kong and the area is not compatible with Australia.
How can it be that games that we purchased in Australia for the DS, that played fine for a few months will now not play? What is the region protocol with DS Lite?
Any solutions for this problem?
Any tips on waht may be going wrong?

I purchased a DS Lite brand new via Ebay from Hong Kong last October. It played gams from there and also some we purchased in Australia until about 2 months ago. Now it will only play games for Gameboy Advanced - the others will not play at all - can anyone tell us what the problem may be - not try to sell us a new DS please?

From Wikipedia:
"The Nintendo DS is region free in the sense that any console will run a Nintendo DS game purchased anywhere in the world; however, the Chinese version games can only be played on the Chinese iQue DS, whose larger firmware chip contains the required Chinese character glyph images. Although Nintendo DS of other regions cannot play the Chinese games, iQue DS can play games of other regions. Also, as with Game Boy games, some games that require both players to have a Nintendo DS game card for multiplayer play will not necessarily work together if the games are from different regions (e.g. a Japanese Nintendo DS game may not work with a North American Nintendo DS game, though some titles, such as Mario Kart DS, are mutually compatible). With the addition of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, certain games can be played over the Internet with users of a different region game."

In simple world your Nintendo DS has a different firmware version, installed on a different chip, and is not compatible with many games from the rest of the World.
This happens with Chinese Nintendos, and to some extent (only few games don't work) with japanese DSs.
All you can try is installing a patch or a different firmware version, being the chinese chip different, I do not know if the firmware update will work or will damage your DS.
You need to do the operation at your risk.
Registering here you can get a patch for your firmware.

You should be still bale to play many non-Chinese game on your DS, the problem is that you do not know which ones before trying the games. Try renting the games before buying.
An alternative solution is buying games for Chinese Nintendo DS on Ebay or on the Internet.

Some Wi-Fi enabled games (e.g. Mario Kart DS) allow the selection of opponents by region. The options are "Continent" and "Worldwide", as well as two non-location specific settings. This allows the player to limit competitors to only those opponents based in the same geographical area. It is unknown whether this is based on the region code of the console in use, the region of the game card, or geolocation of the IP address.

My hinge broke on nds

If you have a valid receipt nintendo will have to cover it under warranty. Provided it just snapped and is not broke because of bad handling.
Alternatively order a new case through eBay and just switch the old case with the new one.

Shops cant get them

If you go online to currys or argos and maybe comet you can quickly search a lot of stores for stock and then reserve the game for you to collect. Or if you are desperate / not so bothered about paying over the odds try amazon or play.com

NIntendo ds lite game going blank

If you are referring to a game going out during game play you need to clean the DS game slot as well as clean the contacts on all your games. The games contacts get dirty, sometimes you can't even see the stuff building up. When you put the game in the DS that dirt transfers to the DS's connectors and they get dirty over and over again until they no longer make good contact with the game. This has been a cause for game lock-ups etc. ever since the first NES console in 1985. Purchase a cleaning kit from a local store like Game Stop or Wal-Mart. If you can't find one there try Ebay. DO NOT USE ALCOHOL, this will break down the gold plating on the game contacts and the DS contacts.
