I get this every now and then, usually because, during a scan, I abort for some reason--reset the computer, force-quit, whatever. The printer driver, I think, leaves some breadcrumbs that it can't recover from when it runs again.
Anyway, I reset the printing system and install the latest HP driver. If that doesn't work, I delete the HP folder in the Applications folder; then remove whatever files I can find in the /Library folder such as Application Support/Hewlett-Packard, Application Support/HP, any HP file in Preferences, Image Capture/TWAIN Data Sources/HPScanPro.ds.
Then reinstall the driver and things work fine. I'm thinking this last item, the HPScanPro.ds in the TWAIN folder might be the culprit but I haven't tried just remove it alone--after I remove everything things work so I can't "try it again"...and don't want to! =)
Anyway, I've had success with this method. Good luck!

I have exactly the same problem with my HP C4180. Printer works fine, but when I click on HP Scanpro, I get the same comment - "Sorry. Scanner could not be initialized..etc." Is there a simpler way to get the scanner back than to erase everything to do with HP in my files?
