The video color distortion with the bowing in the center is called a convergence failure. the 6 blinks indicate a power supply shutdown for high voltage protect. the 14 blinks is just the tv trying to turn back on. you may be having to problems with the convergence and the 6 blinks or it may be related because the convergence amps can cause shutdown if they are shorted. i suggest calling a serviceman per the possible tow different failures. good luck

My 12 year old Sony KP-53V80 TV suddenly turned off and will not show a picture just a small rainbow at the top of the screen, then a whistling sound, crack and turns back off. can you help?

sounds like the inverter went bad...There's a high voltage device in there that runs the whole "picture" thing. There are capacitors involved with it that have probably failed leading to this mess.. That would be what that "crack" is...If you try to turn it back on does it just "click " and then stay off?

We own a Sony Sony kp-53xbr4ct and recently the image on the screen began to look like a 3d picture with red and green colors. Some research on our end points to a convergence problem. My question is...

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from www.TvRepairKits.com

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

2001 Sony KP-53V90 53 in. Rear Projection Television has a problem related only to the picture, the top and bottom of the screen are bowed into the middle, the video feed label and volume scale are also...

This is probably the notorious "light engine" problem that all of these Sonys of this design run into sooner or later. It is usually more expensive to repair that what the TV is worth, sadly. A Sony authorized repair center can confirm this.

I have a pic problem is it fixable

If the picture is bowing in on the sides, this is called a pincushion problem. Please confirm that your model is KP-53XBR45 and I'll look up the probable defective parts.

Picture Distortion

you have a convergence problem.. If you understand how this works then you can go into the set find the convergence ic's and replace them and sometimes you need to do some alighnment as well. Its always best though to let a service tech do a job like this as he will have all the proper equipment to adjust and troubleshoot the set Good luck
