Did you just recently run "Disk Cleanup"?

The only way I know system files get compressed is through "Disk Cleanup" unless it's done manually.

You can try and boot into safe mode and decompress the file:

1. Restart computer
2. Start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard until you get a menu of boot options.
3. Select Safe Mode
4. Your machine will boot in a diagnostic looking mode, but should allow you to get to your desktop
5. Go to the START MENU and select RUN
6. Type in: cmd
7. Click OK (this will take you to a command line)
8. Type in >cd c:\windows
(Note: not necessary to type the ">". It's only there for reference)
9. Hit the ENTER key
10. Type in >compact /U /S /A /I *.*
11. Hit the ENTER key
12. Let it run it's course until you return to a c:\windows> with a blinking curso.
13. Type in >exit
14. Hit the ENTER key
15. Restart the computer.

I would be anxious to see if this works for you. NTLDR is a system file and might not allow access to it while in the actual operating system. The next option would be to use a 3rd party boot utility like BartPE with the "compact" application packaged with it or the only other option to reload the Operating System. Remember to backup your files before reloading. You could use an IDE/SATA to USB converter to connect your Hard Drive in your computer to another computer using the USB interface and backup all your files. The converters usually cost close to $30.

Let me know if I can be of any other help.

NTRL is compressed Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

First you need to boot to the recovery console.

To boot to the recovery console follow these steps:
1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. Click(or press any key) to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3. When prompted type "1" or if you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5. Now you should be at the comman prompt and ready to repair the ntldr file!

Now all you need to do is enter the following commands(in order) and each command on a new line just like you see them here:
cd \
attrib -c ntldr
exit

Your computer should now reboot, and everything "should" work!

Please rate this fixya

NTLDR Missing, Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

What happened is when you changed the drive letters you switched one that should not have been changed.... You need to change it back so the original C: is C:

Because the original NTLDR file was on the C: drive which is the Windows XP Boot Loader and when you swapped it it couldnt find the ntldr on the new C:

From my opinion the only way to switch it back is to reinstall the OS onto the drive you want to be C:

Compressed boot manager

Windows Vista includes a new Boot Manager (BootMgr) that replaces the old NT Loader (Ntldr).

If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information

More Info MS KB 919529
More Info MS KB 927391

This can usually be solved by checking the boot devices, and if no problems found then use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair".

If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
This can usually be solved by using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If that fails then use WinRE to enter the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands:
  • compact /U C:\bootmgr
  • compact /U C:\ntldr
