My switch is broken and I can't get the handle off to reach the rocker switch.... any ideas?

  • catran Jul 28, 2008

My switch is broken also, how do I get the handle off without breaking it?? I removed the screwa but it won't come off. There is a hole above the screws that I know you need to use somehow to disengage the cable for the self propel, but I can't figure it out.

I also have a My Hoover Wind Tunnel Bagged Vacuum and the on/off switch has totally quit working. the only way to turn it on/off is to unplug. I have removed the handel manually turned off the switch inside re4placed the handel. This allows me to turn on the vacume however then can not turn it off unless I repeat the procedure.

Where did you get the part?

  • wannano621 May 19, 2009

I have the exact same problem with the on/off switch. It developed a couple of months ago when my Wind Tunnel was around 18 months "new". I contacted a local authorized Hoover repair center and was told this is a common problem with the Hoover self-propelled Wind Tunnel. I was quoted $85 for the repair. I'm contacting the Hoover Corp!

Replace the rocker switch inside the handle. Part #28161067, it's about $2.50.

Take the two screws out, and pull the handle towards you. If you are behind the vacume grab both sides of where you took the screws out, then pull it towards you. It does slide out.

This happens all the time on our vacuum. Just remove the handle and switch the button manually inside. You will have to do this from time to time as the power switch on the outside will constantly stop working. This, along with the belt replacements are the common complaints on this machine.

Heres what I did. Took the upper handle off and you'll see the plastic assembly that actually runs across the on/off switch. Using a small screw with a large head. I pre-drilled a hole at an angel at the spot that runs across the buttons, screwed the screw in place. Now it uses the head of the screw as the contact to the button. It did eventually stop working and I simply took the screw out and put a wider washer than the screw head on the screw. Put it back in place and viola.

This is a pretty old topic but here is what I did to fix my problem. After I took the handle off I was able to activate the internal switch - it turned the sweeper on and off as it should. Rather than installing a new switch, I decided to see if I could get the arm that activates the switch to be a little more stiff. I stacked three, inch round felt furniture pads (for a wooden chair on a ceramic floor). I smashed them down by standing on them and wedged them behind the arm that activates the internal switch. This pushes the arm forward enough to turn the sweeper off. It has worked for about 5 or 6 times. I hope it lasts for a while.

Perfect solution! 25 cents is better than $40 for a new handle assembly! :D

Oh, I only needed two pads for mine (make sure you look to see what width is necessary to push the control arm foward on your model).

Hoover Wind Tunnel does not turn on

that is a pretty good lifespan for a hoover, but its probably the power switch that's bad. Hoover uses a very poor quality switch. It shouldn't cost to much to have it replaced

No suction on Hoover Wind Tunnel.

Greetings from GoVacuum.com,

First this is a common problem on ALL bagless vacuum cleaners. Usually it takes longer then 1 day however.

Is there no suction in the suction hose, or is it not suctioning from the floor?

Most people buy a bagless vacuum once, then return to a bagged one after their bad experience, you are not alone!

Please give me the model number to your Hoover, (found on the bottom or the back of the vacuum on a foil label).

Thanks,

A clog or partial clog is what causes the motor to overheat, then a thermo protector will cut off and the motor will stop until it cools down. So either you do have a clog, in the hose or down by the brush roll. If they are clear, and the filters are clean, then maybe the thermo protector is bad and needs to be replaced.

Hoover wind tunnel vacuum cleaner shuts off during use

Check the inlet down by the brush roll to make sure it isn't clogged. If not and the hose isn't clogged, then probably the thermo protector (part #28382093) maybe bad. It is mounted near the motor. Could be motor Part #43576188. But I would suspect a clog in the inlet or hose, or the thermo protector has gone bad.

There was a recall from Hoover awhile back regarding the switch, On the model number tag is an 1-800 #, call it and have your model and serial number ready, they will tell you if you need repair from this recall. But if it is only 2 or 3 years old, then it isn't for your model. Otherwise just replace the switch.
