Question about Olympus FE-230 Digital Camera

Lens not working after only one year

Turn on camera, makes grinding-type noise, then lens goes in and out several times... nothing focuses... when trying to zoom, camera turns itself off. Camera is exactly one year and one month old. Very annoying that a camera only lasts one year. You can bet that I will rate Olympus much lower than I have in the past for reliability when I fill out Consumer Reports' survey this year. ANy solutions found yet?

Hi there - same problem with my camera - started to make the grinding noises and won't focus etc approximately 1 year after I used it. It's now not covered by the warranty, of course! Looks as though this is more common than I expected.

I meant to post this as same problem, not solution, sorry: Same here.. bought the camera early April '07. Problem began in May of '08. Turn it on and the lens goes in and out several times but it won't focus.

I have the same FE230 camera about 1 year old. When powering up the lens moves in and out making grinding noises then finally stays out, the screen is black. I switch the mode switch from auto to movie and back to auto, then screen works but will not focus. When I move the zoom lever in either direction the focus (lense inside) moves all the way in one direction and then the other no in-between. Sorry! I have no ideas I guess I will try to call Olympus.

I have had the camera since June '08. It started doing this same thing in November '08...pretty sad. I don't know what even started it.

I bought it for my husband 4 months ago!! :(
It doesn't focus properly anymore, you never get a clear and neat image. Actually this is the second one. Pretty sad...
I'll try the shaky shaky thing.. but not happy about the product.

OMG This one was pissing me off for the longes because I love to take pictures and the zoom no longer wored on my camrea and the Lense just stayed poped out and would not retract.

I turned on the camra. and then turned it off but while it was turning off I pressed down on the lens and it snaped back into the camrea like it belonged and now it works like new again.

I turned it back on and was able to zoom in and out just fine and when I turned it off it went right back in like it was supposed to!!!

THANK GOD!!! : )

Someone on here with the same problem mentioned that they shook the camera violently and it fixed the problem of it not focusing. I tried the same thing and actually gave it some light slaps on the tabletop. Well, now it works! I'm somewhat concerned that this fix won't last long.

Like many others' FE-230s, this camera began not focusing shortly after the one year warranty expired. I found my receipt and it turns out that I purchased the 2 year service plan at Best Buy and could get the camera replaced. But, now it works. Will it fail again after the 2 year plan expires? Jeez....

I did the same exact thing as foxy p and it worked. If you turn it on, wait for the lens to stay out, then push the on button and put pressure on the lens as it's going back in, it works perfectly the next time you turn it on- no buzzing or blurryness at all. I'm a little wary of how stable it is but hopefully this is a good enough fix for now.

Unfortunately, had to send the camera in for repair... around $75... but they replaced the lens among other things, so I suppose it's a brand new camera for $75. Although still agravating that it was only "good" for one year.

Auto focus drive not working. Makes a grinding noise and nothing happens. Sounds like a gear has stripped.

First try to use another lens If:
A. It does the same thing, bring your body to a camera repair shop.
B. It doesn't, you'll need to either buy a new lens or repair it at a camera shop.

Sony 18-70 kit lens vibrates badly

This is a lens problem, the AF motor of the lens is trying to engage the gears. Sometime it works, sometimes it does not... It happened to my sigma 70-300. The only solution is to have it repaired. If under warranty it should be free, if not.... might be cheaper to buy a new lens.
