Problem for Canon Digital Cameras

I have a Canon Rebel XTi EOS Digital Camera and I just bought a USED Canon Ultrasonic 75-300mm Zoom Lens for it and for the first hour I used it I was so happy with its performance (I switched from a Nikon model previously owned) But after this hour of usage the Zoom lens no longer worked ERROR appeared on the screen and told me to Turn the Camera OFF then back ON. This did not help the problem, I have checked that I have it on AF and that it is snapped on correctly. What do I do now and how should I try to clean it?
