We have direct TV, also a regular antenna for local stations, tied into our TV through a VCR. How do we connect the converter box?

Without more details there is only a couple of conclusions - maybe the set top box you have is faulty or incompatible in some way with either the tv or the antenna.

Incompatibility with the tv seems unlikely as presumably the on-screen menus generated by the box are displayed satisfactorily - allowing you to select a menu, scroll and select an item and then view the channel seeking process. If this is so it suggests the connection between the box and tv is good.

That rather suggests the box is faulty or the antenna is faulty or incompatible.

If neither TV has a digital TV tuner, you will only be able to watch one channel on both TVs with one converter box. You will also need some sort of RF repeater if you want the person in the second room to change the station without moving the box. You will need a splitter/amplifier connected to the converter box TV out. (I'll assume you are using the coax out.) If you will only watch one TV at a time, then use an A/B switch on the converter box TV out.

If one of the TVs has a digital tuner, put the splitter/amplifier between the antenna and the converter box and the TV with the digital tuner.

Note: amplifier/splitters and switches do fail. If you get a "no signal" message, take out the splitter and connect the converter box directly to the antenna or one of the TVs depending on your set up.

If I understand your request right, You do not have cable or satellite box.
You can not record from your TV. You use the TV as a monitor from the dvd/vcr combo box. What the box receives is what shows on the TV. So you will have to have a digital convertor hooked to the (antenna in) dvd/vcr combo box, (antenna out to the tv antenna in) Depending on the antenna you are using that is on the other end of your cable-in coax connection this will hook to your antenna in on the digital convertor box. If your cable is hooked up and operating correctly and directly to the tv that is digital ready you probabbly have a good picture. When the vhf/uhf signal was transmitted you could go from the dvd/vcr to the tv with no problem. But now that the signal is digital and the tv is set for digital the dvd/vcr will not pass a digital signal to the tv. Best suggestion, you have to get a digital dvd/vcr receiver. what regular channels don't you get ?

to get the vcr to record the box you will need to either plug the box audio / video output jacks into the vcr audio / video input and antenna to tv OR plug RF antenna out of box to antenna in on the vcr and vcr antenna out to tv( or the video/audio out jacks on vcr to tv )

I had a similar problem with an Insignia converter box. This is confusing but . . . I was told by an Insignia person that you can only program the channel that you have on and cannot record a different channel. My output channel is 3. My roof antenna is attached to my converter box "From Antenna" jack. Attach the converter's "To TV (RF)" jack to your VCR's "Antenna Input" jack. Attach "Antenna Output" jack to TV "Antenna Input". You will see your programs on your output channel, but if your VCR is like mine, your VCR may not recognize anything but your output channel, no matter which station is actually showing on the TV. If I want to record a show on channel 7 while I'm gone, I have to make sure the converter station is on 7 and that I choose channel 3 as my channel to record. You cannot program shows to be taped on different stations unless you physically change it on the converter box. I put my VCR on "Record" and flipped the stations from one to the next from my converter remote control and I taped exactly what was on the screen from one station to the next. You cannot tape one thing and watch another. Clear as mud??? Hopefully, not.

first of all does your television and/or vcr have a cable connector and/or a set of rca outlets? if they have a cable connection in the back all you have to do is hook the cable from the antenna to the "in from antenna" on your cable box and then connect a cable from "out to tv" to "in from antenna" on the vcr and a cable from "out to tv" on the vcr to "in from antenna" on the tv. then you need to make sure on the converter box and the vcr and look for a channel selector and see what channel they are on. most vcr's have a selector for either channel 3 or 4, look at what channel it is set to and if your converter box has the same thing then match it with the vcr. then tune your tv to that channel and you should be able to work your vcr as long as the vcr/tv button shows that you are on the vcr. now if your tv and/or vcr have rca outlets and your converter box has the same then just hook the cable from the antenna to the cable box and substitute the rca cable for the regular cable and tune your tv to video or line input.

Hook your Insignia box between your antenna and your television. You still need the antenna.

Connect your rabbit ears to the Insignia. Connect the Insignia to the antenna input on the "cvd/vcr combo". Now turn on the television to show the "cvd/vcr combo".

The Insignia simply goes between your antenna and your television. In your case you also have a vcr so if you want the VCR to be able to play and record digital stations you will need the Insignia between the vcr and the antenna.

If connected to cable or satellite your tv will work after digital conversion occurs. If using an antenna, look up a local TV station to see if they're already broadcasting in digital. Most are. Enter that DIGITAL channel # using your remote. If you get a picture, you don't need a converter box.

Here is my setup.
1) Separate DVD player 2) Separate VCR 3) Digital to Analog Converter box 4) Analog TV 5) Rabbit ears (UHF/VHF) antenna
The antenna goes into the converter box.   The RF-output of the converter goes into the RF-Input of the VCR The DVD output goes into the front input jacks of the VCR The VCR RF-output goes into the TV RF-Input The VCR Line output goes into the front of the TV
To watch DVDs, we turn on the DVD player, turn on the VCR, and set the VCR channel to L2, and tune the TV to channel 3.  The converter is off.
To auto record on the VCR, the converter must be tuned to the station being recorded.  The converted must be turned on, the TV can be off. 
To watch VCR tapes, turn the TV and VCR on.  The TV is set to channel 3.  Just press play on the VCR.
To Watch TV.   Turn the TV and converter on.  The TV is set to channel 3.   Change the stations using the converter.
