Hi,
depending on operating system windows 98, hit f-9 while system is starting and navigate to scandisk to force a scandisk or by pulling power cord and plugging back in after 5 min without shutting down( I dont recommend the latter but it will work) let scandisk run.
XP- go to ((my computer)) either on desktop or hitting start button and in there and then within my computer right click drive c. click properties ,click tools ,click error checking ((check now)), check all empty boxes on error checking and you will be prompted to restart, do so, windows will go through checkdisk and hopefully either scandisk or checkdisk will pickup that error, if not you will have to get a registry repair program or take the machine in or maybe call a local computer place for a tip or trick

good luck

Turn off computer...when it comes back on (at the very beginning) you get a black screen/w bios/boot menu at bottom right...then it switches to another screen/w recovery at top left....follow directions from there...

Need to free up space on d drive

Dear Duchessjone, (if you are dutch i can also awnser you in Dutch ;) )

You can clean up your drives by first deleting/uninstalling all the programs that your wont use. (NEVER go randomly delete mode, just because of disk space. This might comprimise the drive)
Especially programms like computergames tend to ask a lot of your harddrive memory.

You can go to your D Drive by right clicking on the menu and then click explore. There click 'computer' and select your D Drive.

After unstalling/deleting files. Right click on the drive. Then click on properties. Select the tab Extra, from the properties menu. There you can defragmentate your drive.
This will fill up all the gaps created by the drive or created by deleting programms ( which we just did)
Filling up these gaps, will make the drive faster and gives more drive space!

I hope this information was all helpful to you.

With kind regards,

MisterN

I have 8 programs that won't work and say "they do not have a program association with it for performing this action". They say to "create an association in the folder options control panel".

Windows uses "associations" as part of its object-oriented interface.

For example, after installing Adobe Reader, there will be an "association" created, such that everytime that you double-click on a 'PDF' file, then Windows will launch Adobe Reader.

Similarly, '.doc' files will be associated with Microsoft Word,
and '.xls' files will be associated with Microsoft Excel.

> create an association in the folder options control panel

That's the correct way to "add" or "delete" a specific association.

It's strange that you don't have an association already defined;
it could be the result of a computer-virus, namely, one that has deleted that association.

Hi

Thank you for your query

Please can try the following

1) Click Start>Run
2) type in msconfig, and then click on the startup tab
3) Remove any ticks/checks which has the mention of mcafee in there
4) click OK and then restart

This will hopefully take the error message away

How do I delete tottadooddle?

Open your browser, then click on Add-Ons under Tools. You will see the app in the list there and it can be uninstalled from there. You will have to manually delete it the search engine list in Firefox using the Manage Search Engines selection in the drop down.

I got the info direct from Web Tattoogle web site

When trying to open adobe reader 8.1.1 get following message: patch package could not be opened. verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify...

it sounds like the application that is needed to uninstall the version 8 is corrupted or missing. Try reinstalling version 8 first then uninstall it before loading version 9. If you can reinstall version 8 and it asks you if you want to repair or install, choose install to get all of the files back before uninstalling it again. Always uninstall from add/remove programs. If deleting it from program files instead of uninstalling it correctly it will cause problems.

I programm trying to uninstall a program (quicken) to install a newer virsion and the older one will not come out

Quicken is one of the "friendlier" applications. Unless your hard drive is full, you don't need to uninstall the older one to install the new one. I suspect the uninstaller has failed. Without more detail, I can't help there. However, Quicken will install the new one and may even attempt to uninstall the old one itself. Regardless, you should be able to just install the new one and have it locate your existing data. Don't just delete the directory as you'll probably delete your data as well.

Uninstalling game trial

this type of programme will be accessing the internet when you are online, so the only way you can uninstall it especially if it is not in add/remove programmes, is to start up the pc in safe mode (keep pressing F8 on boot up) and then when prompted select start windows in safe mode, or try system restore to a date before your daughter installed it. All your icons will be large, but dont worry, see if you can uninstal from add/remove prog if its ther, if not look in your c:\programmes folder for it if you know the name of it or click search and delete all folders it finds, sometimes it's only a shortcut on your desktop and nowhere else. When you have uninstalled it restart your pc and it will go back into normal boot up and it should not re appear.

Cant get rid of program

It may have put something into the registry so that it will always download and run on start up. You can try the following to get rid of it. 1) Open the registry editor. (To do this, go to Start -> Run and type: regedit ) 2) Browse to the following location HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run 3) Look at all the keys (items) in this folder. The program you are looking for may be listed here. If you find it, make note of where the file is located and delete the file that is mentioned in the key. Then delete the key. This will keep it form restarting after reboot.
