Hi dbird30,
You will notice that your DVD player has two types of cables, one that is three cables in one with yellow, red and white colors; and other that is bigger and cylindrical, we call this a coaxial cable. To record from the TV you must unplugg the TV's cable and plugg it into your DVD player, plugg it where it says 'cable' or 'input'. Now you must connect the coaxial cable it came with your DVD player and plugg it into the DVD player where it says 'to TV' or 'output' and connect the other side of the coaxial cable to the TV. At the end you should see that the cable that was plugged into your TV is now plugged into your player, and the player is now connected through another coaxial cable to the TV.

To get the functionality you're looking for you'll need to to take the cable running from your DVR output and connect it to the input on your DVD recorder. Next you want to connect a cable from your DVD recorder output and connect it to your TV. If this is an HD set up you want to use HD Cables for all of the connections.

Connect DVD recorder to Video player/recorder- transfer VHStodisc

hook the video output from vcr to dvd input at rear, then hook output from dvd to tv input. note; you can not record protected vcr movies you can only record tv shows from sattelite to vcr or dvd recorder. its best to record straight from sattelite to dvd recorder for picture clarity.

I'm simply looking for the most efficient way to hook up my HD-TV with HDMI inputs to both my cable box (with HDMI inputs) and my DVD player/recorder so that I can record from the TV I watch.  ...

The way you have it hooked up right now will not work unless you have a coaxial out on your cable box going to the dvd recorder. Even then, picture quality will be severely degraded. The best way to do it is to leave your cable box hooked up to your TV via HDMI and connect your dvd recorder to your cable box via component video if your dvd recorder has a component video input. If it doesn't, then just use the composite video input. That way your picture quality will be better and you will still be able to record with the TV off.

Hook ups

use a video splitter for the audio and video, or go out of the DVD player in to the DVR, out of the DVR into the TV (WARNING!!!! Trying to hook a DVD player to any recording device may trigger the copyright protection, causing blue flashes, and distorted pictures)

Set up problems

is this a dvd/vcr recorder combo? or is it just a dvd player? if it is only a dvd player, there wouldn't be a rf input. you won't be able to record or burn recordings.just hook up the audio/video cables to your tv to watch dvd's. if it is a recorder combo without a rf input or output, you may need a rf modulater they sell at radio shack for about $25.
good luck.
