Several possibilities, but most likely a starting capacitor failed. Could also be a bad compressor. Go ahead and call a repairman.

Outside unit will only run for a short amount of time with A/C before the fan stops turning and starts humming, squealing/screeching and the top of the outside unit gets hot.

The bearings are bad in the motor and after the fan runs enough it eventually gets hot, making the bearing screech and the fan locks up. Need to replace motor again. See if it has a warranty. The reason it gets hot is because the fan is what removes the heat from the coil and if the fan isn't running there is nothing to cool it off so to speak.

Lennox central air for home not kicking on. Fan on the outside not spinning but motor is making a humming noise. No cold air coming in home. We have circuit breakers they are turn to the on position. ...

Is the indoor fan working? The problem with the outdoor fan sounds like it could be your capacitor. Turn off the power to the outdoor unit and make sure the fan turns freely using a screwdriver or something that will reach the blades. If it turns freely then it is probably the capacitor. Let me know what you find.

If the humming is your compressor running (feel the large copper line going into the unit, it should feel cold aftter a few minutes of run time) then the fan motor or the capacitor or both need to be replaced, check for voltage to the fan motor when the unit is "humming" if it has voltage and will not start replace the fan motor and the capacitor. hope this helps.

Carrier Compressor Issues?

When you shut it off and back on it slugged the compressor if you turn it off and back on before the pressures equalize between the high and low sides it will slug the compressor and it will not run should let sit for five minutes or so before restarting. The humming is either the compressor making noise usually common for the compressor to make some noise or the fan motor bearings are getting bad on the outside unit. If the unit works normal probably not much you can do till it breaks if it is the compressor it is more economical to replace the whole unit if it is just the fan motor it is worth changing. You could take an amp draw on the fan motor and the compressor to see if the are within the limits on the name plate of the outside unit.

Fan on the outside unit is not running

Fan motor is dry or going bad try to lubricate it and see if that frees it up. If not you will need to get a new fan motor.

When you turn on the airconditoning.the outside unit just makes a humming noise but does not work, This is a mobile home unit.

First disconnect the power to the unit. The motor may have seized up. Depending on how old the unit is. If the fan does not spin freely after you remove the top of the unit. You may have to replace the fan motor.............

Sounds like a bad start run capacitor. The exhaust fan motor may be bad too. Be careful, this unit delivers 220volts of electricity.

Outside unit will not operate

Sounds like a bad fan motor. Inside fan runs, compressor runs. Outside fan. Are your contactors pulled in when thermostat set on cool? If not might be a contactor. If contactor not pulled in touch the top of it with the end of a screwdriver. If fan spins turn unit off a buy a contactor...

Tip: Always make sure power at disconnect is off

The fan for my air conditioner will not turn. When we cut the system on it makes a humming sound and the light go dim for just a moment and this goes on repeatedly. No heat or air. We have a dual...

If the humming noise is coming from the attic it would indicate that the blower motor on the air handler is trying to start but the rotor is locked.

If the humming noise is coming from the outside unit and the fan runs but the compressor does not your compressor has a locked rotor.

If the blower motor is the problem the outside unit should still start as normal but you would have no cooling due to no air movement.

In ether case it sounds like you need to call a service tech to diagnose your system.
