TomTom ONE XL will not power up or charge in my vehicle.
Can not get my ONE XL to operate in my car. If thye battery is down I cannot get my TomTom to operate on the charger. I have also noticed that the charging indicator light does not illuminate in the car. I have returned the unit for this problem but I have the same condition with the second ONE XL. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem and it is not the fuse, as the adapter light is red in two different vehicles, it's getting power, but the light should be green. I plug it into my computer and it gets power, but I can't get past the boot up screen. Piece of work.

If you TomTom is not coming on after a long sleep.. I.E. more then a few days with no use, try this......
(1) Plug the unit into either a PC or your Car (2) Wait for about 2-5 minutes to get some charge into the unit (3) Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds until you see the start-up screen
Why did it die? I have found and many other have found the battery does not live long without a power supply to charge it, it would seem to me even thou it is powered off, the TomTom is still sucking away at the battery and it would seem there is nothing that can be done about it.
A likely cause is that the battery is "dead" ... i.e. no longer holds a charge. The GPS runs on battery power, even if it is plugged in. It will work even if the battery holds a (small) charge. But if the battery doesn't a charge anymore, the device will not start up, even when it is plugged into a power source.
If this is the case, you'll want to change the battery.
you can download a copy of your manual HERE from the tomtom website.
your right! your unit is probably powering off from a low battery...tomtom recommends charging it via the usb cable from your computer for atleast 4 hours..
after you charge it up enough that it will start, tap the screen where it shows satellites linked, then in the upper ight corner you can see the battery and if its charging and what percentage af the battery is charged..
its a common problem on these Xl not to charge, but it just might be low on battery.
If it is plugged into the car, you use the DC charger. You can charge it using the usb port on your computer as well. In the accessories section of tomtom.com you will find an ac adaptor as well that can be purchased to charge it to an electrical outlet.
The switching off problem can be generaly be attributed to 3 causes:
Battery is not being charged enough ( charging via USB from a PC will take days ) your charger could be putting out the correct voltage but not enough current.
The battery is on its way out. TomTom batteries have a set lifetime where they gradualy take less and less charge. if your battery capacity is low then you might just have enough power in it to allow the TomTom to start up but then it shuts down again shortly after. ( You can check this becuase if powering the tomtom via a power supply the tomtom should remain switched on ). If this is the case , then it probably proves the battery is the problem.
Faulty software ( very possible ) . I have found that where certain files are corrupted on the SD card the TomTom will shut down at some point in the loading up cycle. The reasoning being that if the TomTom cannot procede with boot up , it will either hang or shutdown or load up incorrectly.
If you made a backup of your SD card then formatting and reloading the files from your PC might cure the problem.
