I can not find instructions on how to install the cartridges. I have tried what the sticker on the printer shows, but have not been successful.

Where are the instructions you refer to?

Never mind. After rotating the cartridge 90 degrees from what appears on the sticker, it slipped right in.

I got message: Turn off then on

There's an error in the Ink cartridges chip R/W system.
1. Try to power printer off, Then power on, and when the printer carriage moves from the right side to the left side disconnect the power cord

2. Remove All cartridges

3. Gently clean the contacts where the cartridges are located

4. Gently clean the cartridges contacts

5. replace the cartridges

6. move the carriage to the Extreme right position

7. Check the timing strip. if is dirty, clean it with a tissue paper and hot water

Hope the Best!

I have a HP officejet J4550 All in one and recently purchased an ink cartridge with the same number but is the xl and it prints for a while and then I get an error about being Incompatible

You must be using HP56.
Have you refill your cartridge at all?

If you did, gentely wipe out the cartridge circuit part with Q-tip (with bit of alcohol).
And wipe out the circuit part in the printer where cartridge goes in as well.

And try back.
Sometimes by having some dust or bit of ink make cartridge unreadable.

If you used brand new, do same thing to cartridge circuit part.
Otherwise, there got to be some circuit shot happen in printer.

For your reference, HP5510 is not a new model however has not cause major problem.
Good practical and durability is good.

It seems like you are out of ink....especially black.

Pls refill or get brand new one.

If you would like to save money, try refill kit by "ROADINK".
Not only they are easy, but also the printing quality is good.
For your better understanding pls check out my youtube video.
And will see how easy ink refill can be done.

My printer display says: "print cartridge problem [black] reefer to device documentation to troubleshoot." What do I do, I can;t get my printer to print. I just bought new ink, so the cartridge can't be...

Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.

HP Officejet J4550- "Print Cartridge Problem"

the official solution, which probably won't work since you did most if not all of it already: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01818839&tmp_task=solveCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&product=3645097#N636

the unofficial solution, which will be more likely to work: http://www.land.netonecom.net/tlp/ref/letters/hpPrinters.php

perhaps the worst thing about HP is that they do not even mention the chip timeouts in their troubleshooting instructions.
