Gateway 4026GZ lost wireless ability

4 or 5 months ago, I tried to do a windows update. It froze up the computer. I was able to get the computer working again however now the wireless connection won't work. A friend has brought his computer over and can get wireless so I know it is not my router or cable.

I've tried to download the suggested driver from the Gateway website but it won't load up. It gives an error.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Sarah

How do i turn the wireless on and where the switch

Posted on Sep 27, 2008

Make sure your wireless card is on (use Fn + F2 to toggle on and off).
Also make sure it is enabled by going to control panel -> network connections and right clicking on your wireless network device and going down to enabled.

I had the same problem a few months back and submitted questions to Gateway then Acer who manufactures Gateway. No help was really given so I went to Microsoft. All I was told to backup all files I wanted to keep and reformat my drive, then reinstall the Windows. That did work for a full hour only and the problem came back. Since then I purchased a new hard drive and the problem is gone

I can not figure out how to get the computer to make a wireless connection.

Add the Home SSID to the Preferred Network List After you set the SSID on your home gateway, you may need to add it to your preferred network list if Windows XP Wireless Auto Configuration is enabled. (Although automatic configuration is nice to have, your IT department may have disabled it on your laptop in order to meet their needs. If they have, you'll need to use the tool provided by your laptop or wireless manufacturer to manually configure wireless settings.) To manually add your home wireless network to the list of preferred networks when Wireless Auto Configuration is enabled, follow these steps:
• In Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
• Right-click the Wireless Network Connection, and then click Properties.
• On the Wireless Networks tab, shown in Figure 3, click Add.

• In the Wireless network properties dialog box, shown in Figure 4, enter the SSID you configured for your wireless gateway (ExampleHome_g in this example.)

Note: Figure 4 assumes you've added the Windows WPA Client Update. If you haven't downloaded and installed it, you probably should. For more on the WPA Client Update, see Overview of the WPA Wireless Security Update in Window XP.
• Fill in the rest of the fields, including the necessary authentication and encryption information based on the configuration of your wireless gateway.
• Click OK and your home network will be added to the list of preferred networks.
Now, whenever you're at home, your work laptop should automatically see your home wireless network and connect to it.

I installed two 512 MB DDR1 333MHz PC2700 memory modules in my Gateway 4026GZ laptop. They all cause the laptop to freeze up with the screen not working. Tried different memory modules (same 512MB)

Hi

Thank you for your query

According to the spec of the laptop that should be ok, it may the memory modules are bad

Please try the following

1) Try putting just the one module in, in turn, if it starts to freeze with the one or the other you will know which one is faulty

If this has been useful please leave positive feedback/vote/testimonial - Thank you again

Plug in an ethernet cable into your ethernet card port on the left hand side of your laptop. When it connects to the internet click on the Windows update icon in the system tray. It should show you a Realtek Wireless RTL8187b wireless adapter driver update. Install it, you may need to reboot, but in any case you will have wireless networks available to you and you can pull out the ethernet cable. Good luck.
