Question about Gateway Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a Gateway notebook model MX6956. Upon startup, I get ascreen that asks if I want to start normally or in safe mode. Either one gets me an error message that starts with UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME and then the computer will restart itself after a few seconds. I have pictures I would like to get off the hard drive but can't get the computer up long enough to do so. I made recovery discs after it's purchase but would like to save the pictures if possible. Would appreciate any help

1. That would indicate your hard drive is either bad or corrupt.
2. You can try and boot of your windows xp cd, select R at the first prompt to go into recovery console and run chkdsk. That often fixes these kinds of problems.
3. If that doesn't work, you can take your hard drive and, using a usb enclosure or cable to convert the type of hard drive you have to usb, attach it to another computer and remove your files that way.
4. If the chkdsk didn't work, it may be time to purchase a new drive.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya. Thank you.

We have a Gateway Laptop running on Vista. Turned it on this morning and got the "blue screen of death" that said it had a Fatal Error KnownDLL 000021a and a bunch of other numbers. We read that...

Just press and hold F8 on startup (before the Windows logo appears). You should get the screen with the title Advanced Boot Options and the following menu. (which I get on my Gateway NV5915h)

Choose Advanced Options for: Vista (Windows 7 on my Gateway NV5915h)
(Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice.)

Repair Your Computer

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Enable Boot Logging
Enable low-resolution video (640x480)

Disable Driver Signature Enforcement

Averatec 3200 PC Notebook freezes at startup but

I suspect one of your startup items to be causing this problem. I suggest you to disable the startup items in safe mode and then try booting in normal mode.

Since you have already tried in safe mode i believe you know how to get in there so lets start from second part on how to disable the start up items.

Step1: Click on start and then click on Run.
Step 2: Type msconfig and hit ENTER.
Step 3: Click on Startup tab.
Step 4: Click on Disable all then click on apply and then Click on OK.
Step 5: Your system will be prompted for a reboot. Go ahead and restart it.
Step 6: As soon as the system is backup you would get system configuration utility screen where in you should check "Don't show this message again".

If you are curious to know which start up item is causing this problem then you might want to try enabling few at a time and narrow down.

If it's still under warranty, take it into the shop for repairs.

Laptop goes into loop upon startup...

How did you manually configure it to go into safe mode? Did you edit boot.ini? if so try editing this back to normal. You could try hitting F8 on startup and doing a different Safe Mode startup to break the loop. From there you may be able to get it stable enough.

Another option would be to make a Bart PE boot disk and use that to edit Boot.ini

Gateway laptop mx3414-black screen cannot load windows

Try going into safe mode upon startup by hitting the F8 button. If it does then hit safe mode to get into your computer. Go to start>accessories>system tools>system restore. Follow the wizard to restore your computer to a date earlier than when you started having problems. Let me know if you have any problems or questions.
