If your running a linux install program, it should detect the HDD unless windows has forbid access to the HDD. I heard of people having trouble installing linux on machines with vista. Try to run a live cd and see if that install program will work.

Asus eee pc 4g error message grub rescue

This would imply a Linux distro.. What are you attempting to do, exactly? The error occurs when you install Linux and then it is removed;(sometimes incompletely other time when you remove the partition from the Windows Disk Manager). If you want to retain Linux, just put the disk/flash drive for it back in and finish the installation or boot to the recovery. If you only want a Windows system, follow the steps:
  1. You'll need a disc for the version of Windows on your hard disk drive. Place it in and select for whatever will bring you to your advanced options. (This is so you can get to your recovery command prompt).
  2. Instead of Restoring from Disk Image or whatever other standard choices you have, you'll want the command prompt.
  3. Using the following commands will restore the Windows Partition, if it's on there still.
    1. bootrec.exe /fixboot
    2. bootrec.exe /fixmbr
    3. bootrec.exe /ScanOS
    4. bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
  4. Once you reboot afterwards, it should restore your Windows system if it didn't get removed during the Linux installation.
Hopefully this helps, if not; I'll need more information as to how it happened.

What is the procces of operating system instal

there are a lot of ways:
1. Install through USB Device.
2. Install through a DVD.
It would also depend on the type of Operating System: Linux or Windows.
It is relatively easy to install Windows OS than Linux though it is easy to install Linux is easier when installed inside windows.
For windows installation:
1.Insert windows DVD or USB and boot through the device inserted.
2.After the language selection, you will be directed to select the partition in which the windows will be installed.
3. Select the partition and click install.
4. the software will be installed over time.
for Linux installation:
it will depend on the type of linux. it is best to refer the particular linux's free documentation to better understand the installation process

I am using linux mint 8 and now trying to install windows 7 but it shows error in installation having error code as 0x80000100

Hi,

The Grub bootloader that Linux uses may be conflicting with the install program for Windows.
I suggest formatting the partition you had Ubuntu installed on if your intent is to replace it.
This should make the partition available to Windows 7.

If you wanting to dual boot then i'm sorry you can't at the moment because of compatibility issues between wubi/mint4win and grub2, Linux Mint 8 comes without a Windows installer. The development team is working on the issue and new ISOs will be published when it is resolved.

Keep your eye on the Mint 8 website for the latest ISO with the windows installer included.

Regards.

I have a Dell Latitude D800 Fails to boot OS's

I think that your main problem is actually disorder. I would advise you to start from scratch, backup your data using the safe mode, and then format the computer completely using an original version of windows, which has bootable option. This will allow you to have a cleanup version of the windows, and you can start from there. It doesn't sound like you have a hardware failure to me. It looks as if something was installed incorrectly on the winodws and disabled it from loading correctly. You probably have just a few corrupted system files. The whole trying to install several different systems on your system resulted a total chaos. I really think that you can only benefit from a fresh start and a full format. Please feel free to update me with anything

Hi, I have inherited a Compaq Armada E500. Has Windows NT which I hate and doesn't register when anything is plugged into the usb. I was advised to install Ubuntu onto it instead of the Windows, but it...

Due to the specifications of the system:

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10441_na/10441_na.HTML

You are going to have performance issues regardless of the OS (Linux or Windows) If the system has 512 MB RAM, it will run Windows XP fairly well but slow.

As for Linux installation, that system was never certified for Linux and depending on the distribution (Version) you are trying to install, there may be issues.

As far as drive space, linux should load on any of the drive sizes listed by default. If you have not done so, remove all existing partitions and try installing for a Clean HDD.

But to be honest, a Pentium III portable system is for all intents and purposes operationally obsolete. You might want to consider buying a system rather than fight this one.

What is grub error 17? how to fix it?

Its GRand Unified Bootloader used in Linux OS.
Normally you get this error when GRUB is not able recognise the partition from which you are trying to boot the system. Make sure the boot partition on your system is recognisable by GRUB (such as EXT3).

You can try to restore the GRUB using the LIVE CD
  1. Boot From Live CD
  2. Open Terminal Window
  3. type >sudo grub
  4. then type : find /boot/grub/stage1
  5. you'll get something like: (hd0, 1)
  6. then type : >root (hd0, 1)
  7. type: > setup (hd0)
  8. >quit
  9. >exit
Remove the Live CD and reboot the system.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Thank you for choosing Fixya

Not able to install linux

My guess is that when installing XP the option to format using NTFS was accepted. You should get a (Windows 98) DOS start floppy/CD and re-partion and format the drive before booting Linux install from CD/DVD
