I just got this camera for Mothers Day and now I have a problem with the focus or zoom. The camera will automatically focus in, but will not zoom in or out, it just gets blurry. Neither the video mode, nor the memory mode will zoom in focus. I went thru the book and called tech support, and they said send it back.
Does anyone know how I can fix this?

In automatic mode and automatic focus - The camera should focus onto the subject given that there's enough contrast between your subject and the background. If it not focusing at all even in broad day light conditions - You lens is faulty. Also - Do you or your friend have another lens to test if the camera is faulty?

The camera is unable to focus properly in low light at long focal lengths. You might have to throw some light on the subject with a flashlight until the camera locks in the focus or resort to focussing manually.
iESP is the default auto focus setting for the C-8080 Wide Zoom camera. It uses a contrast detecting system to analyze the entire image by comparing the subject against the background to achieve focus. When the shutter button is pressed half way on the C-8080 Wide Zoom, the AF target mark automatically moves to an area of the image where it finds the optimal contrast.
Occasionally it is necessary to have the ability to manually focus a digital camera. A good example is shooting through the windows of a tour bus on a rainy day. The camera may choose to focus on the raindrops on the window rather than the actual subject. To enable the MANUAL FOCUS function hold down the OK/MENU button for a second or longer. In the lower left corner of the LCD screen you will see MF (MANUAL FOCUS) and AF (AUTOFOCUS) with AF highlighted in green. Use the left arrow key to select MF. You will now be able to use the up and down arrow keys to manually focus the camera. An added feature of the C-5500 is that when you are using the MANUAL FOCUS Mode you will see a magnified portion of the image in the center of the LCD screen. To get out of MANUAL FOCUS Mode, simply use the right arrow key to reset the camera to AF. Then press the OK/MENU button to return to the default functions.
