Blue Screen and TV shuts off

Intermitently, TV screen turns blue, then TV shuts off. Also, screen starting to go red now too. I've been told there could be a "short" that needs to be repaired on blue tube and other tubes...not sure I'm phrasing this correctly.Does this sound right? Is the TV worth fixing or should I just get a new one? TV is model Sony KP-57HW40 and is about 5 yrs old. Thanks! Mary Jane SAME SITUATION HERE...HAVE TV BY SONY MODEL KP51WS500 FOR 5 YEARS SCREEN TURNS BLUE AND IMMEDIATELY TURNS OFF...OTHER TIMES JUST STAYS ON ...IS THIS TV WORTH REPAIRING?

Yes I have the exact same problem.. 2 months ago a repair guy came and he repaired the CRT socket. It was fine for a bit and now the same problem has returned. He told me today it's the CRT itself, not the socket. .. said he'd get back to me tomorrow in regards to repairing it, so I'm not sure what it's going to cost.. but I bet it will be lots. I know televisions have decreased in price dramatically but it doesn't change the fact that I paid over $3k for this one only 6 years ago. I think I should get more than 6 years out of a Sony product. (Moments ago I sent an email to Sony saying this.)

TV turns blue shuts off and timer/standbye button flashes...how much does it cost to fix this...or should I just buy another TV?

  • L Machine Dec 14, 2008

Same thing, I think. I haven't left it on long enough for shutdown, but the "curved blue lines" had been apparent; today after being on for about 1/2 hour, the image just "faded" to a light blue hue with darker blue hemispherical sections at the top and bottom of the screen . Now, upon turning on the set, the image fades in approximately 20-30 seconds.

Has anybody had any sucess in resolving this problem ?

Here's a shortcut to what the blinking codes mean.
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/08/sony-tv-led-blinking-codes-what-does-it.html
Strange how some people have 5 blinks. Most with this problem have 8 blinks (like myself)

I still have the blue-flash-then-shutting-off problem.. (8 blinks meaning voltage error) but I did fix the blue lines.. The lines across the screen can be very easily fixed whether they're blue green or red. . No, I mean REALLY easy. Took me longer to get the cover off. Once the front cover is off it takes 10 seconds. This link was also posted recently in one of the posts below as a solution..
http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html
(My lines didn't look like the ones in the picture mine were several evenly spaced blue arcs)

After some research I believe the flash/shutting off problem means the CRT is going. I've also read that it might be the D-board and I'm not even sure that that is... But If it is indeed the CRT then I'll let you know it's very difficult to find a replacement blue CRT as this part has been discontinued.. but I did eventually find an alternate to an alternate part (yes that's the 3rd alternate !)) online for $256. Here: http://store.tv-repair-service-salinas.com/8-733-649-35.html

If you're bold enough to attempt that then good luck and please let us know if it worked.
Or another alternative is there's a whole lot of Boxing Day sales goin' on right now.

SOURCE: Blue Screen and TV shuts off

I had the same problem but now I have another this tv is garbage. Anyway your problem is free and easy. Pop off the two screw covers at the front bottom and unscrew. unscrew the next cover. There are six adjustments you need to turn the blue down a little bit. It is one of the bottom ones. Make sure you mark all original positions.

Screen fades to blue.

The Blue SCREEN setting is too high. These adjustments are located inside the TV behind the front panel. There are two screws behind covers and then a wooden panel to remove to access the adjustments. The leftmost set are for BLUE, the middle are GREEN, and the right are RED. The top row are FOCUS and the bottom are SCREEN. Focus will focus/unfocus the tube and Screen will adjust the power of that tube (there are 3 tubes, one for each color). If Screen is adjusted too high, horizontal lines will appear (my TV had red lines, but I played around with the knobs and saw that it could happen on any of the colors). Additionally, if SCREEN is set even higher than that, the tube could go so high that it turns the whole screen that color (in your case, blue). If this happens the TV will shut down, probably due to either overheating or overvolting. To fix this issue, turn the appropriate SCREEN dial down until the lines go away. In your case, you want to turn the lower left dial down. Don't turn it too far down, if you turn it more than necessary the TV can give you an AKB error (noted by the STANDBY light flashing a sequence of 5 blinks).

Sony turns on and off again

My tv too had a blue screen problem. Then it started to shut down after staying on for less than a minute. I thought that I would with a huge repair bill but I followed the directions at this link: http://www.somelifeblog.com/2007/06/sony-projection-tv-red-line-repair.html and now my tv works perfectly.

Blinking red power light - set will not turn on

Were the pale blue lines real thin in a slight diagonal from bottom to top of your screen? If so you either have a bad component in the blue drive, Blue CRT socket or your Blue CRT is shorted.Try removing the blue CRT socket and trying to power up your set for a moment without the blue socket attached to the tube. Be sure the CRT socket doesn't touch any components when you try this. Let me know if the set starts up without the blue.

Blue Screen

Your blue crt has a short - you can verify this by unplugging the socket from the blue crt and powering up the set and you should see a yellowish looking picture with just the red and green crt's operating. You can try turning down the screen control pot (B) for blue with the blue crt on (just to the point where you no longer see retrace lines in the picture on a blank input)Sony has had a lot of problems with the crt's on these models and sooner or later all the crt's will fail - For a permanent repair all must be changed.

Blue Screen and TV shuts off

Yes, you are correct on the phrasing. The CRT's were a common issue with these units and all three must be replaced as sooner or later the green will follow the other two CRT's. It was a great model and had a beautiful picture when operating normally. The CRT's are costing about 200 each for rebuild as the green and blue are mostly no longer available. Your repair cost are going to approach $1000.00 or more.

Blue screen

It sounds like the high voltage distribution block but that is not the cause of your problems, the tuners you talk about are the picture tubes ,one for each color, the blue picture tube was arking and you got lucky and got 6 more months of use, it and might have corrected when you drop it but now is the red doing it and you need to do the same but it might not work this time, dont be surprise.Be carefull while trying things in the back, there are high voltages there and is not safe unless you are familiar with tv service.
