This could be a faulty cable or
switch, but could also be a faulty motor.
The motor also has a built in over-current protection device which normally automatically resets itself, but if the motor has a serious fault or the over-current device itself is faulty then this could be the cause of the lack of continuity.
Both the switch and motor are available quite cheaply on
eBay, but fitting new ones requires good DIY skills (especially the motor), and some unusual tools (Torx drivers).
