It should be on the driver cd that came with your main board,, If you need it to install windows, there is a readme file in the SATA/Raid Folder which contain the instruction for putting it on a floppy disc, basically it involves copying the .sys , inf files to the floppy,, The folder to be copied is named floppy

If you dont have the cd consider using Vista or MCE these have sata drivers built into them

I need to know what hardrives are compatible with my computer

You can buy any HDD/SSD as long as it has some sort of SATA connection. The differences between SATA, SATAII, SATAIII are mainly speeds. But all will be recognized by your machine.

Windows XP needs the SATA textmode drivers for it to recognise the SATA hard drive. This can be downloaded from this link:
http://support.gateway.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=2391
You will need the SATA AHCI driver

You must then burn the drivers to a CD or copy to a USB stick. When installing windows XP, you will be prompted "press F6" to load additional drivers, at this point the install will ask you to specify where these drivers can be found, if you direct it to the USB or CD Rom (USB is better to avoid disc swapping), it should find the drivers needed and then recognise your hard drive.

The above is a bit academic though, because this does not appear to support Windows XP according to the downloads options on the link

Under BIOS setting, set your hardrive to IDE instead of SATA, or use Win XP CD that contains Sata AHCI driver in order to recognize the hardrive.

In the days of AMD Athlon chips we didn't have SATA, but it sounds like you do, and you have hooked the drive up?

1) Make sure the BIOS has SATA enabled as well as IDE
2) Make sure your device manager has a driver for your motherboards SATA controller
3) Open computer management
4) Choose Disk management
5) Initialise disk
6) Create partition.
7) Format as per normal.

replace your cables and try again. if unsuccessful locate your hardrives manufacturer ie: maxtor software MAXBLAST , download the hardrive software utility and ``0 fill`` your hardrive to factory default.

download servicepack three for the latest sata and raid drivers. until you get the driver for the new raid drive, windows wont see it. you can also put ubuntu as a second op sys from inside windows, and it should work in ubuntu. if it does than its a driver issue. this should update the pb drivers, the device itself doesnt require one to work in xp, so it must be the computer that is the issue.....try updating your sata and raid drivers for the controller that came on the PB

What is the hardrive used on the Acer Aspire L100?

JFontes,

Your PC has a 160Gb Serial ATA (SATA) drive.

Any SATA drive should work for ya. 160 Gb is a good sized drive, so IF you have room in the case you may want to just ADD a drive to the PC instead of replace the existing one.

According to the specifications for the PC you should have 2 more SATA connectors.

Hope this Helps you.
Dave

SATA?

be sure sata is enabled on the bios, install sata drive driver, this is for your computer to detect a sata drive. connect the drive using sata cable to your board.
