When there is a musical soundtrack accompanying a television show, the musical track is louder than (and drowns out) the voice track making it difficult and almost impossible at times to tell what is being said. When there is no music such as a talk show or news, the sound is clear and normal.

Some TV's have sound settings to empathies voice. If the TV has a centre speaker you can increase the sound output on that. That will make voices louder.
However many people do complain about loud music drowning out voices on TV. The problem is that movies were meant to be seen in cinemas and TV sound systems don't match up to that. If you can't find a solution consider a surround sound system as this will correct the sound problems on movies.

If you have just bought these, take them or send them back.

First do the photos. When you have finished that, click on the "Next" button at the bottom of the window. Now look for your music files by clicking on the "Select Audio Files" button in the "Soundtrack" section. For example, go to "My Documents" and then select the "My Music" folder and click on "Open". Select the music file you want and once again click on "Open". The track you have chosen should now appear in the white area in the "Soundtrack" section. Repeat this to choose more music tracks until you are satisfied with your selection. To delete any tracks from the list, select it in the "Soundtrack" section and then click on the little dustbin to the right and just above the white area where the names of the music tracks are.
Hint: Try to get the combined length of all your music tracks ("Total audio time") close to the "Duration of Slide Show". Then decide how long (in seconds) you want every photo to be displayed before the slide show moves on to the next photo. All your photos will be displayed for the same amount of seconds. In the "Duration" section, at "Set Duration", type in the amount of seconds you would roughly want your photos to be displayed for (for example 8 seconds). If the "Duration of Slide Show" and "Total audio time" is the same or very close, you can ignore the part where it says "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack". However, if the difference is several seconds or more, click on "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack". This will ensure that your slide show (photos) ends when the music ends. It means that your photos may now be displayed for slightly less or more seconds than the amount you indicated, but at least the soundtrack and the photos will end together.
When you are satisfied with your soundtrack, click on "Finish" at the bottom of the window. If the computer asks you if you want to replace an existing file, click on "Yes". The soundtrack window dissapears. Now click on "File" at the top left of the window and choose "Save Project".

You can listen to your soundtrack by clicking on tab 3 ("Produce") and then on the "Enter" button on the remote control.

You should be aware that some music files may not work with SlideShow Expressions, particularly some files that have been downloaded from the internet, for example through iTunes. This has to do with copy-protection and causes some tracks not to play properly. As a rule, though, mp3 files should work fine, as well as tracks ripped from CDs, like wma files. The User Guide gives a list of all the supported music files. The User Guide is on the install disc. To find it, insert your install disc and click on the relevant link that appears, or you can go to "My Computer", right-click on the CD/DVD drive and click on "Explore" to look for it on the install disc; it is a pdf file.

There could be a number of reasons why you're having trouble adding music files to your slide shows. First I'll lay out the procedure and afterwards I'll give some hints / a link to individualsoftware.com where problems with audio files are discussed.

The procedure (adding music files using SlideShow Expressions):
The programme opens and you are automatically in tab 1: "Add Media".
Click on "Create New Slide Show". Click on "Add Photos"; tell the programme where the photos are, select them, insert them, change their positions if necessary.
Now:
1. Click on "Next" at the bottom of the screen.
2. At "Soundtrack", click "Select Audio Files", then tell the programme where the music files are located on your computer, click to highlight a specific music file, click on "Open". The music file you selected now appears in the Soundtrack window. Repeat this until all the music files you want appear in the Soundtrack window. (You can delete any of them by clicking to highlight any specific file and then click on the little rubbish can icon.) As you go along, the total audio time for the slide show / chapter is displayed as well as the "Duration of Slide Show".
3. In the "Duration" section, you have the option to set the length of time you want per slide (seconds) - usually 8 to 10 seconds is best. (All your slides will follow this instruction; you can't set the duration of individual slides to a different time.) At "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack", you alter the duration of the slides to fit the length of the soundtrack. (This cancels out the previous seconds-per slide setting.) You must therefore choose music tracks that, when added together, will approximately span the whole length of the slide show and then you can fine-tune this by clicking the "Auto-Fit to Soundtrack" option.
4. When you are satisfied with your choice of music tracks and the length of your slide show, click on "Finish".

Issues with music files when using SlideShow Expressions

According to the User Guide (section 3-3) - included on the install disc as a pdf file - the supported audio formats are: mp3, wma, wav, ra. Make sure that your computer also meets all of the requirements (on the box).

Photo & Video Expressions is not compatible with audio files that have been protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) functionality. Most audio files purchased online through Internet music retailers like iTunes, Urge, or Rhapsody are encrypted with some form of DRM. Similarly, audio files that have been extracted from a CD or DVD (the process known as "ripping") using certain media applications (iTunes, Windows Media Player, etc.) often have default settings that encrypt the files extracted.

There is no way to used DRM audio files purchased from online music retailers with Photo & Video Expressions. However, if you want to used music and audio files that you have extracted from your CD collection, then all you have to do is change the ripping setting in your media application before you extract the files to your computer.

I also had this problem. I read elsewhere that this happens when your TV's audio setting are set to surround sound when you don't actually have a 5-speaker system. I changed the settings to regular stereo and it fixed the problem perfectly.

in the menu there should be some type of set up for this, it will most times show you on your screen a room with all the speakers in it and ask you to hit test then it will shoot a white noise type of sound around to each speaker and ask if you heard it, there are then adjustments you can make for the front, rear, and side sperkers independent of one another.

Thank you, everyone! I thought maybe I was losing my mind. I can hardly watch a lot of the TV shows anymore due to the inappropriate use of music -- either it's too loud or there's just too darned much of it. Come on, TV producers! You are supposed to get better with time, not worse! Thank goodness I'm not alone.

It's an audio setting you will need to change. some movies are decoded in dolby and some by dts. This means you will have to adjust accordingly depending upon the source of audio in the movie. a double d is dolby's trademark and dts is regesterted trademark for the company "digital theater sound." The icons are on the dvd usually. Anyways, find the set up button on the remote control and use the directional arrow keys on the remote; up, down, left, or right to adjust for best sound. the thc5 will have the most function on the surround settings, movie, music, and all st. try a sequence, than repeat until desired sound is heard... good luck
