My JVC mini DV camera was dropped. There was no visible damage to the camera but it no longer records. Every other feature is working on the camera except a "check tapes erase protection tab" message appears when I try to record. I have tried a new tape and also have powered off and on with the tape in the camera. Any ideas?

Mine is doing the same thing. I have tried several new/ used tapes, switched the protection tab both ways and tried putting tape over it, removed/reinstalled the battery, and cursed at the camera and threatened to throw it out onto the road, but nothing I've tried has made any difference.

Turn the power off and back on again while the tape is in the player.

Do you have another tape to try to see it it's still doing it?

When I try to record the screen says 'check tapes erase protection tab'

Normally, tape cartridges have a protection tab on them that when removed prevents users from recording over. A piece of masking tape over the empty hole will allow you to record on the cassette.

Let me reach back into the past here!
Well, protection tabs are on the cassettes. Video8 & Hi8 used a built in re-usable tab (unlike VHS, Beta etc which used a once only break-it-off tab, a method originating near 50 years ago with audio cassettes)
In reverse of the that method, when the tab is out (or slid over) recordings can be made on 8mm's including D8's and not when the tab shows.
they are located on the back edge of the cassette usually with indicator icons in the plastc of the case to help.

Dear Wlburns68,
There are many protection features on this camcoder as follows:
  1. If the (DEW) protection feature is activated, leave the camcoder for at least two hours in a dry, warm room with the cassette compartment opened and the battery pack removed.
  2. When you have recorded something that you wish to keep,
you can protect it so that it will not be accidentally erased.
    a. Protecting a tape :
Push the safety tab on the cassette so that the hole is
    b. Removing the tape protection :
If you no longer wish to keep the recording on the
cassette, push the write-protect tab back so that it
    covers the hole.
You can have a similar function on Memory cards as well.

  3. One is the Protection that you set on an image or a video to protect it from being overwritten (the point number 2 is at Tape/memory card level and this one is at image level)
I think the issue that your camera has is to do with either (2) or (1).
Please let me know if that helps and if it doesn't still I would love to hear from you so that I can research a little further..

    Problem when Trying to record

If you are trying to record to a tape and the display shows "Protection", you must slide the protection tab at the top of the tape to the "Rec" position.

of course, the first thing to check is the record protection tab on the cassette tape. other than that, check inside the camera to make sure a small piece of tape label or plastic isn't stuck in the mechanism, perhaps keeping the record protect sensor switch from operating.

Make sure the little red tab on top of the tape is set to record and not save. The camcorder will not let you record it its set to save

    Protection! Flashes on screen

This camera has a history of the flexible harness located on the cassette housing tearing when it rubs against the frame as the housing moves in and out. The harness tears and opens the circuit that detects the tapes record lockout tab, the camera is preventing you from recording on the tape in error. This repair requires replacemnent of the cassette housing, not for the faint of heart. I wish you luck. Joe Weibel

    Record problem

Make sure the Erase Protection tab is in the closed position that allows recording. If not, slide the tab. Some tapes have removable tabs. If the tab has been removed, simply cover the hole with adhesive tape.
