My Toshiba Satellite laptop has begun to lose connection to my wireless internet provide (Frontier). I log on and the machine automatically connects but every five or ten minutes, the signal weakens. My second computer, which is newer, doesn't lose the signal. That is the signal on the Lenovo machine remains at "excellent" - all bars - while the Toshiba drops to "limited accessiblity." I've reviewed the settings on the Toshibe to ensure they weren't changed from two months ago when the machine was working just fine. Settings seem to be right. Is it time for my Toshiba to get a new wireless adapter? Or is this a problem that may just require a little tweaking . . .?

Your Toshiba Satellite Pro might be using a specified IP address. Try to set it to obtain an IP automatically. Depending on the Windows OS, whether it is XP, Vista or Windows 7, go to your Control Panel then Network connections or Network Sharing Center and double click on the Local Area Network connection (if your are using wired) or Wireless Connection. Look for the TCP/IP protocol and make sure it is enabled as "Obtain IP address Automatically" and "Obtain DNS addresses automatically". Then click OK to save settings.

Is this the first time you are trying to connect to your Internet with that Toshiba laptop?

If that is your first time you need to call first your Internet Service Provider and check what can they do for you.

If there is no problem with you Internet Service Provider, try to press the FN+F8 keys these are the toggle keys to enable or disable your Wifi.

When you press those two keys observe the laptop if you will have a message that says Wireless Connection is On or Off. If it is off, try to press those two keys again to turn on the laptop.

I believe your laptop came with a Wireless On/Off switch, check that also if it is on there will be a light indicator for the Wireless Connection. It should be a steady light.

Now, if the wireless connection of your laptop is on and still you can't connect to your wireless connection, try to update the drivers for your Network Adapter.

Here's the link for the latest driver:

You need to search for your operating system and choose the Wi-fi on all categories.

You need to save it first on the laptop and after that you will have an option to run it on the laptop. After the installation of new driver try to restart the laptop and try to connect to your Internet.

If that will not work.

Hope this helps. :-)

Problem connecting to router

Log into the Belkin router and make sure that the DHCP services are running. If it is, and you still are not getting addresses, perform a factory reset of the router. There is a link in the web management console to do this.

Laptop wireless connection

assuming you have set up the router to enable DHCP which automatically detects pc's and assigns an automatic ip address, and assuming you are using XP and not Vista, although the workthrough is similair; go to open internet explorer>tools>internet options>connections tab and ensure that never dial a connection is ticked, then apply and exit IE

Next go to control panel>network connections, double click your wireless connection icon, select the TCP/IP line and click properties, then make sure obtain an ip address automatically is ticked, apply it ok, then open IE again and click the refresh button a few times.

Keep losing internet connection

Recommendation: If you can switch from the 3rd party wireless utility to the Windows utility. There should be a check box under the properties that says, "Let Windows manage my connection." Also turn off any power management that stops your drives, suspends the machine, etc. When doing WEP, use the actual key, not your password. i.e. the one that looks like "aaff996753bc" not "rosebud".

Reason: Windows wireless starts before you even log in and loads as a service, it runs whether your logged in or not, sleep mode, etc. 3rd party utilities...especially my personal bane of all wireless devices "Netgear" load as applications. That means they don't initialize until after log in and they can be suspended completely or prioritized by power management and resource management utilities when the machine is idle. As for the key thing... WEP translation with Linksys especially can be a little funny with some wireless so I use the key itself which always works.
