Radio disabled and cannot enable

About the Pavilion zv5000 (2004 or 2005), the wireless network connection icon says the radio is disabled, but there is no switch visible to switch on and no access through windows network connections etc... This computer is using the broadcom device with that little red icon that looks like a radio wave.. I cannot enable through there or through the WLAN connection menu in the set-up... Any ideas?

Of course, I finally located the switch. It's more of a "button", and when it's turned off it is barely visible. Anyway, the radio button is right at the top center of the keyboard above the function keys. When it is on, it is lit up blue. When it is off, you may not even know it's there!

Verify that the radio is enabled.
It is possible to disable the transmitter of the wireless card without Device Manager showing any problems.
Note: Follow the instructions provided to enable wireless card.
  • Most wireless cards will put an icon in the system tray (the line of icons in the lower right corner of your screen). Right click this icon and it may have a menu option to enable/turn on the wireless radio.
  • Some systems come with a Wireless Radio switch to disable the wireless radios. The wireless radio switch is usually located on the front side of the machine. If you are having difficulties with wireless connections, make sure the Wireless Radio switch is set in the On position.

I was online when I ''lost'' my internet connection. When I run the cursor over the broadcom symbol, the message says''network 2 radio disabled''

I think you have a wireless enable/disable switch, the rightmost in the row above your keyboard, you must have accidentally pressed it. Press it again to turn the wireless network card on, it should come up and connect in a couple of moments.

IBM THINKPAD T43. I can find the switch for my ibm thinkpad T43

Are you sure you have a wire card installed? If so, then try this:
  1. Right-click the My Computer icon and select Properties.
  2. Click the Hardware tab and press the Device Manager button. The network card should appear under Network Adapters.
Note: If the card has a exclamation mark over a yellow background, then this is an indication that the card is experiencing a problem. Go to Driver download step 5.

  2. Check for association to an Access Point.
If you double-click the previously mentioned system tray icon, the configuration utility of the wireless card will appear. This utility will be able to show the status of the wireless card, showing what channel the card is using and what signal strength is being received. It may be difficult to maintain a connection if signal strength is low due to either interference or distance. For example, interference can be caused by 2.4GHz cordless phones, other Access Points in the area, and physical structures such as load bearing walls or metal partitions.
    Note:
The utility can be used to configure the wireless card settings, but if using Windows XP Zero Configuration or Access Connections, you will need to use those programs to actually configure the wireless card as they will overwrite the setting of the utility.

How do I turn the radio on the wireless card

When your computer is switched on, the WiFi radio is almost always transmitting or receiving signals. In certain situations, as in an airplane, signals from the radio may cause interference. Use the following methods if you need to disable the radio and use your notebook without emitting radio signals.
Use the Optional Computer Radio On or Off Switch

If your computer has an external switch installed, use it to switch the WiFi radio on or off. See the computer manufacturer for more information about this switch. If you have Intel® PROSet/Wireless installed, the current state of the radio displays in the Intel PROSet/Wireless main window and on the Taskbar.

Use Intel PROSet/Wireless to Switch the WiFi Radio On or Off

From Intel PROSet/Wireless, the WiFi radio can be switched on or off. The status icon on Intel PROSet/Wireless displays the current state of the radio.

Switch the WiFi Radio On or Off from the Taskbar Icon

How to use the Device Manager to Disable the WiFi Radio

The WiFi radio can be disabled (made non-functional) from the Windows* Device Manager.
