Generic problem for all Projection Televisions

For the last few months,

posted by biboo on Jul 12, 2008

For the last few months, we have been unable to display the captioning on our 2002 RCA TV set in our living room. The captioning does show on the smaller sets in the kitchen and bedroom, so apparently the problem is not with our DirecTV satellite service. It is difficult to find a repair service to come to a residence; however, it would be even more difficult for two senior citizens to take a set of this size to a repair station. Please help. I have hearing difficulty especially when actors go in to their low whispery dramatic modes and I don't want to spend my evenings perched on a kitchen chair or propped up in bed all by myself while my husband watches our favorite programs by himself in the living room.

This is an RCA Model No. F31317. Hope this helps.

We know about the menu buttons but when we program it for captions and then push okay, nothing happens.

Just for the record, our RCA TV is not a projection type set.

I'm still hoping that one of your experts can give us more guidance in correcting my problem with the captioning. Please keep trying.

If you have the original remote for this tv, there should be a menu button on it, where you can get into the tv's settings menu to enable the captions. If there isn't one on the remote, then the menu button may actually be on the tv itself. (next the rest of the buttons for volume, channel, etc..)

I will look up your model tonight and see if there is a common failure that would cause this. This is a control issue within the set where the CC decoder is not being turned on. This should be a simple fix (I hope!). Were there any other symptoms of trouble with the set prior to the CC not working?

In the meantime, you may want to investigate assistive listening devices. These can connect directly to equipment and provide a direct link to either an ear bud or headphone setup. This is done with wireless technology and is often available at theaters and other venues for those with hearing difficulties.

Stay tuned...

Dan

Do you get any OSD (on screen display ) at all, for example when you press the menu button on the remote, do you get anything?

Comment by IrishDruid, posted on Jul 14, 2008

Could be a defective EEPROM in the TV, which is a small chip, and will need replacing. If you cant find a service center, try the box on the right that says "Repair Service". Put in your Zip code, and mention that you were referred by Fixya, and hopefully, you should get a discount.

Hope that helps..

What is model number of the TV set?

Comment by Bubbabear64, posted on Jul 12, 2008

If you can tell me what the screen size is, I can pull the manual up on it.

Comment by Bubbabear64, posted on Jul 12, 2008

I can't find the manual for you tv unless I know what size screen and what type of tv it is.

RCA wants to know based on the way thier search engine is setup.
